The HP OMEN 27s is a 27-inch gaming monitor with a Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS panel and a 240Hz refresh rate. It is NVIDIA G-SYNC compatible, has built-in speakers and a USB hub, and comes with an adjustable stand. Here is what those features mean for gaming and everyday use.
Refresh rate and G-SYNC
A monitor's refresh rate is the number of times per second it redraws the image. At 240Hz, motion looks smoother than on a typical 60Hz screen, and fast games feel more responsive, provided your PC can produce high frame rates. HP says the monitor is G-SYNC compatible, so it can match its refresh rate to a supported NVIDIA graphics card's output, which helps avoid tearing and stutter.
Resolution and panel
The resolution is 1920 x 1080 on a 27-inch, 16:9 screen. Full HD at this size is less sharp per inch than 1440p, but it is easier for a graphics card to run at very high frame rates. The panel is IPS, a type that typically offers wide viewing angles and consistent colour.
Colour coverage
HP lists 99% sRGB and 95% DCI-P3 coverage. sRGB is the standard for most web and game content, and DCI-P3 is a wider gamut used in cinema and some newer content. High coverage figures suggest richer, more accurate colour than a basic panel. HP also says the display has enhanced contrast with deeper shadows and brighter highlights.
Ports and extras
The monitor offers two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 and two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports. For the highest refresh rates, DisplayPort is usually the best choice, so use the included DisplayPort 1.4 cable. A USB 3.0 A-B cable is also included, which feeds the USB ports from your PC, along with a power cord and a quick setup poster. Two integrated 3W speakers cover basic audio when no headset is connected.
Software and lighting
OMEN Gaming Hub is HP's software for adjusting monitor settings and connecting compatible PCs and accessories. OMEN Light Studio lets you customise the aRGB lighting with animations and colour themes. HP also says the plastics contain 85% post-consumer recycled content under the EPEAT standard definition.
Stand and size
The stand adjusts for tilt, pivot and 100mm of height. The listing gives a weight of 19.1 lb (8.7 kg), and the monitor comes with a one-year HP limited warranty.
Who it suits
It suits gamers who want a fast, colourful 27-inch screen and are happy with Full HD resolution, particularly those playing fast competitive games on a capable PC. It is also a reasonable general-purpose monitor with its USB ports and speakers.
What to check before you buy
- Graphics card: check that your GPU can reach high frame rates and has DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 outputs.
- Desk space: a 27-inch screen with a stand needs room, so measure your desk.
- Resolution: at 27 inches, Full HD shows less detail than higher resolutions.
- Cables: use the DisplayPort cable for 240Hz, then set the refresh rate in your graphics settings.
- Warranty: read the terms of the one-year limited warranty.
