The HP OMEN 24 is a 23.8-inch gaming monitor with a Full HD IPS panel and a 165Hz refresh rate. It is built for fast, smooth motion on a PC or console, with an adjustable stand and tuning software. This page explains what its numbers mean in practice.

What 165Hz and 1ms response mean

Refresh rate is how many times per second the screen redraws. A typical office monitor runs at 60Hz; at 165Hz the picture updates almost three times as often, which makes fast camera movement in games look smoother. To benefit, your graphics card needs to produce frames at a high rate too.

HP lists a 1ms grey-to-grey response time with Overdrive. Response time describes how quickly a pixel changes colour, and lower values reduce the smeared trails behind moving objects. Manufacturers measure it under favourable settings, so treat it as a best-case figure.

FreeSync Premium and adaptive sync

When a game's frame rate wobbles, a fixed-rate display can show tearing or stutter. AMD FreeSync Premium lets the monitor match its refresh to the frames being delivered. HP also lists low framerate compensation and VESA-certified AdaptiveSync, which includes a lab-certified maximum refresh rate. FreeSync is designed for AMD graphics cards, and many other cards can use adaptive sync on compatible displays, but check your own card's documentation.

IPS panel and colour coverage

IPS panels are known for consistent colour and wide viewing angles. HP quotes 178 degrees, so the picture holds up when you sit off to the side. The monitor covers 99% of sRGB and 90% of DCI-P3. sRGB is the standard for most web and game content; DCI-P3 is a wider space used in film, so 90% points to richer colour than a basic panel.

The resolution is 1920 x 1080. At 23.8 inches that is a common, comfortable pairing for gaming, and it is easier on a graphics card than higher resolutions, which helps reach high frame rates.

Stand, ports and setup

The stand tilts, pivots and offers 100mm of height adjustment. HP also mentions cable management and a joypad-style button for the on-screen menu. The box includes a power cord, a DisplayPort 1.4 cable and a quick setup poster. The monitor measures roughly 21.2 x 18.3 x 7.8 inches in its listing dimensions and weighs 15 lb.

Console use and OMEN Gaming Hub

HP says the monitor went through over 140 test cases for console compatibility, so you can connect a console by HDMI. The OMEN Gaming Hub software lets you adjust settings and link the monitor with a PC and selected accessories. HP also states that the plastics contain 85% post-consumer recycled content, and that a one-year limited warranty applies, with certain restrictions.

Who it suits

It suits players who want a smooth, colourful screen for fast games, whether on a PC or a console. It is a sensible size for a standard desk. People who edit photos professionally or want a larger or sharper display may look at other specifications.

What to check before you buy

  • Your graphics card: confirm it can output high frame rates at 1080p and supports the sync mode you want.
  • Ports: check which cable you will use. A DisplayPort cable is included; consoles use HDMI.
  • Desk space: allow for the stand's footprint and height.
  • Console limits: consoles may cap refresh rate below 165Hz, so check what yours supports.
  • Mounting: if you plan to use an arm, check the manual for compatibility.
