The fanxiang SP610 is an internal 1 TB solid state drive in the M.2 2280 format. It uses the NVMe protocol over a PCIe Gen4 x4 connection and is meant for laptops and desktops. This page explains what its main specifications mean and how to check that it fits your computer.

M.2 2280 and NVMe

M.2 is a small, gum-stick-shaped card that plugs straight into a slot on the motherboard. The "2280" means 22 mm wide and 80 mm long. NVMe is the protocol used to talk to the drive over PCIe lanes, and it is much faster than the older SATA connection. The drive measures about 4.3 x 2.4 x 0.4 inches in its packaging.

What PCIe Gen4 x4 means

PCIe is the connection between the drive and the processor. "Gen4" is the generation, and "x4" is the number of lanes. A Gen4 x4 link offers roughly twice the bandwidth of Gen3 x4. fanxiang rates the SP610 at up to 3600 MB/s sequential reads and up to 3250 MB/s writes. Those are peak figures; real-world speeds depend on the file type, your system and how full the drive is. The drive can usually be used in a Gen3 slot, though speeds will be limited by that slot.

TLC flash and the SLC cache

The drive uses 3D NAND TLC flash, which stores three bits per cell. TLC is a common choice for consumer SSDs, balancing capacity and endurance. Dynamic SLC cache temporarily treats part of the drive as faster single-bit storage to absorb bursts of writes. When a long write fills the cache, speeds can drop to the flash's native rate, which is typical of drives of this kind.

Heat dissipation pad

fanxiang says a heat dissipation pad, applied as a sticker, helps the drive keep a stable temperature and sustain its performance under heavy loads. Fast NVMe drives can heat up, and some motherboards and laptops include heatsinks. Check whether yours does, and whether a sticker or a heatsink would fit in the space.

Where it works

The brand says it connects to PCs and other platforms with an M.2 NVMe slot. Check the specs of your laptop or motherboard to confirm which M.2 slots support NVMe and PCIe, since some slots only take SATA M.2 drives. Check games consoles' requirements before buying: they often need a heatsink and specific dimensions.

In the box and warranty

The package has the drive, one screw and a screwdriver. fanxiang lists a five-year warranty and after-sales support. Check the terms, including any limit on total data written.

What to check before you buy

  • Slot type: a free M.2 2280 slot that supports NVMe.
  • Generation: whether your system uses PCIe Gen4 or Gen3, which affects peak speed.
  • Height clearance: especially in laptops and under motherboard heatsinks.
  • Operating system and cloning: how you will move your existing data or install a system on it.
  • Backups: back up important files before changing drives.
  • Endurance and warranty terms: read them before you buy.

The short version

  • A 1 TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD with PCIe Gen4 x4.
  • Up to 3600 MB/s reads and 3250 MB/s writes, as rated by fanxiang.
  • 3D NAND TLC flash with a dynamic SLC cache.
  • Heat dissipation pad, plus a screw and screwdriver in the box.
  • Five-year warranty; check slot, clearance and thermal fit.
