fanxiang S900 Pro 1TB PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD: features, specs and who it suits

A 1TB PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD with heatsink, rated at up to 11,500MB/s reads and 700TBW. What the Gen5 specs mean and what to check first.

The fanxiang S900 Pro is an internal M.2 solid state drive that uses the PCIe 5.0 interface, the fastest consumer SSD standard currently on offer. It comes in 1TB with a composite aluminum heatsink attached, and it is aimed at gaming PCs and creative workstations that move very large files. Here is what the specs mean.

What PCIe 5.0 means for an SSD

NVMe SSDs talk to the processor over PCIe lanes. The S900 Pro uses a Gen5 x4 link, which roughly doubles the bandwidth of the Gen4 x4 link used by the previous generation of fast drives. fanxiang rates it at sequential reads of up to 11,500MB/s and writes of up to 8,500MB/s, with random reads and writes of up to 1,500K IOPS. The listing notes that a PCIe 5.0 slot is needed to reach those figures.

In a Gen4 or Gen3 slot, the drive typically still works, but it is limited by the slower slot. Most people will notice big gains only with very large files, because everyday tasks such as opening apps are already quick on any NVMe drive.

NAND, DRAM and the SLC cache

The drive uses Micron 232-layer 3D TLC NAND. TLC stores three bits per cell, a common way to reach large capacities. fanxiang says it has a 4GB DRAM cache, which holds the map of where data lives so the drive finds it fast. It also uses a dynamic SLC cache, which treats part of the flash as faster single-bit storage to absorb bursts of writing. Typically, write speeds drop once that cache fills during very long transfers.

DirectStorage and creative work

The listing mentions Microsoft DirectStorage, a Windows technology that lets games load assets from a fast SSD with less CPU work. fanxiang says the drive helps with game loading and with rendering images and 8K video clips. How much difference this makes depends on the software, which must support these features.

Heatsink and thermal control

PCIe 5.0 drives run hot, so the included composite aluminum heatsink matters. fanxiang says it keeps temperatures steady under heavy loads. The firmware includes thermal throttling, which slows the drive if it gets too warm to protect the hardware.

Reliability features

The brand lists Trim, RAID support, S.M.A.R.T. monitoring, LDPC error correction, advanced wear levelling, bad block management and power management. These are standard SSD tools for keeping data intact and spreading wear evenly. The drive is rated at 700TBW (terabytes written) with 5 years of after-sales service, whichever comes first, plus lifetime technical support.

Who it suits

It suits PC builders with a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, content creators handling large video and image projects, and gamers wanting the newest hardware. Anyone on an older system will usually see little benefit over a Gen4 drive.

What to check before you buy

  • Your motherboard: confirm it has a PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot and an M.2 2280 mounting position.
  • Heatsink clearance: the attached heatsink adds height, so check the space under any graphics card or motherboard cover. Some boards have their own heatsinks and may not suit this one.
  • Cooling: make sure the case has some airflow over the drive.
  • Software: DirectStorage benefits need supported games and a current Windows version.
  • Installation: follow your motherboard manual for fitting and for any BIOS settings.
