fanxiang S880 2TB NVMe SSD: PCIe 4.0 speeds, specs and who it suits

A 2TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD rated at up to 7,300MB/s reads and 6,800MB/s writes, with a heat pad and 1400TBW endurance. What the specs mean for PCs and PS5.

The fanxiang S880 is an internal solid-state drive in the M.2 2280 format, using NVMe over PCIe 4.0. The model covered here has 2TB of storage, and the brand also lists capacities from 1TB to 4TB. It is aimed at gamers and anyone upgrading a desktop, a laptop or a PS5. Here is what the numbers mean.

What PCIe 4.0 and NVMe mean

NVMe is a protocol designed for flash storage, and it connects the drive directly to the processor over PCI Express lanes. PCIe 4.0 doubles the per-lane bandwidth of PCIe 3.0, which is what allows drives like this to reach speeds far beyond SATA SSDs, which top out at around 550MB/s.

fanxiang rates the S880 at up to 7,300MB/s sequential read and 6,800MB/s sequential write. "Up to" matters: sequential figures come from large-file tests under ideal conditions. Loading a game or starting an app also depends on random access speed, the processor and the software.

Endurance and warranty

The brand lists 1400TBW, a figure for how many terabytes can be written over the drive's life, along with a 5-year warranty. At typical home use, that's a very large amount of writing. fanxiang also says it ran 80 hours of testing and five strict tests, and that it has its own factory.

The heat pad

Fast NVMe drives can get hot under sustained load, and they may slow themselves down (throttle) to protect the hardware. fanxiang says the S880 includes a new-material heat dissipation pad to keep a stable temperature under heavy workloads. Many motherboards and laptops have their own heatsinks, and the PS5 requires a heatsink for M.2 drives, so check the fit.

Compatibility and size

The 2280 designation means 22 mm wide and 80 mm long, which is the standard size for most desktop boards and many laptops. fanxiang says it works with desktops, laptops and PS5 consoles. The listing shows 3.1 inches (about 80 mm) in length and about 0.9 inches (22 mm) wide.

Before buying, confirm your device has an M.2 slot that supports NVMe and 2280 length. A PCIe 4.0 drive normally works in a PCIe 3.0 slot, but it will run at the slower speed.

Who it suits

It suits gamers upgrading their PC or PS5 storage, people editing large video or photo files, and anyone wanting faster boot and load times than a SATA drive or a hard disk can offer. If your device only supports PCIe 3.0, you won't see the full speeds, and a PCIe 3.0 drive may be enough.

What to check before you buy

  • Slot: confirm M.2 NVMe support and the 2280 length.
  • PCIe version: a PCIe 3.0 slot will cap the speed.
  • PS5: check Sony's current requirements, including heatsink height and speed.
  • Cooling: see whether your board or laptop has room for the heat pad or a heatsink.
  • Capacity: the brand lists 1TB to 4TB; this page covers 2TB.
  • Backups: back up data before any drive swap.

The short version

  • 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD in M.2 2280 format.
  • Rated up to 7,300MB/s reads and 6,800MB/s writes.
  • 1400TBW endurance and a 5-year warranty, says fanxiang.
  • Heat dissipation pad included.
  • For PCs, laptops and the PS5, subject to slot and clearance.
