The fanxiang S770 is a 1TB internal M.2 NVMe solid-state drive that comes with a heatsink. It uses PCIe 4.0 and is listed as compatible with the PlayStation 5 for storage expansion, as well as with PCs that have a suitable M.2 slot. Here is how to read its numbers.
PCIe 4.0 and what NVMe means
NVMe is a protocol designed for flash storage that talks to the computer over PCIe lanes instead of the older SATA interface. The S770 uses PCIe Gen4 x4, which means four lanes of fourth-generation PCIe. In general, this gives far more bandwidth than SATA SSDs, which top out at around 550MB/s. Gen4 drives also work in Gen3 slots, but typically at lower speed.
Speed figures
fanxiang rates the drive at up to 7,300MB/s sequential read and 6,800MB/s write. On the PS5, it quotes up to 6,300MB/s. These are peak figures measured under test conditions, so real game load times depend on the system, the game and how the drive is used. Sequential speeds describe large file transfers, while everyday loading also relies on small random reads.
DRAM cache and endurance
The S770 has up to 2GB of DRAM cache, which stores the drive's mapping table so it can find data quickly, and typically helps keep performance more consistent under sustained work. It also uses a dynamic SLC cache, a fast buffer that absorbs bursts of writes. The endurance figure is up to 1,400 TBW (terabytes written), a measure of how much data the drive is rated to handle over its life. A 5-year warranty is listed by the brand.
Heatsink and cooling
The heatsink is included but must be installed separately. fanxiang says the heatsink design keeps temperatures low during long sessions. The PS5 requires a heatsink, or a drive that has one, for its expansion slot, and fanxiang says the drive and heatsink can be fitted together without disassembly. Check the console's maker instructions for the slot cover and clearances.
What's in the box
According to the listing: the S770 SSD, a heatsink, five heatsink mounting screws, one mounting screw and a screwdriver.
Size and capacity
The module is a standard 2280 form factor, about 3.1 inches long (80mm). The 1TB version offers a good amount of room for a handful of large games or a working library, and the brand's note about a 4TB capacity refers to the maximum of the range, not this model.
Who it suits
It suits PS5 owners whose built-in storage is full, and PC users with a Gen4 M.2 slot who want faster storage for games, projects or system use. It is not designed for older laptops or desktops that only offer SATA or short M.2 slots.
What to check before you buy
- Slot support: confirm your motherboard or console has an M.2 NVMe slot that supports 2280 length.
- PS5 requirements: read the console's official expansion guidance on speed, cooling and size.
- Heatsink fit: if your motherboard already has a heatsink, you may not need the included one.
- Speed expectation: results are lower in PCIe 3.0 slots.
- Data backup: back up before cloning or changing drives.
- Installation: follow ESD precautions and the manual.
