fanxiang S109 1TB 2.5-inch SATA SSD: features, specs and who it suits

The fanxiang S109 is an internal 2.5-inch SATA solid state drive. At 1TB, it is the kind of drive people fit when they want to replace a slow hard drive in an older laptop or desktop, or add extra storage to a system that still has a SATA bay. Here is what its specifications mean.

SATA III and the 560MB/s figure

The S109 uses the SATA III interface, which runs at 6Gb/s. In practice that caps real throughput at roughly 550 to 600MB/s, and fanxiang rates the S109 at reads of up to 560MB/s. That is well below newer NVMe drives, but several times faster than a typical spinning hard drive, and a SATA SSD usually makes an older machine boot and load programs noticeably quicker.

Why the DRAM cache matters

Many entry-level SSDs leave out a DRAM chip. The S109 has an independent DRAM cache, which holds the table that tracks where data is stored. fanxiang says this helps both random and sequential write speed and lets it keep writing without slowing down. In general, a DRAM cache helps most when the drive is busy or fairly full.

Data protection features

The listing mentions end-to-end data path protection and LDPC ECC (low-density parity-check error correction), which detect and fix bit errors. It also describes multi-protection circuitry and firmware-level power loss protection, aimed at preserving data integrity if the power is cut suddenly. These are protections against corruption, not a substitute for backups.

Build and size

The drive has an aluminum alloy shell and measures 3.9 x 2.8 x 0.3 inches (about 100 x 71 x 7mm), the standard 2.5-inch laptop-drive format. That makes it a drop-in replacement in most laptops, small-form-factor PCs, consoles with 2.5-inch bays and desktop drive cages that take 2.5-inch drives, often with a bracket.

Capacity and endurance

The S109 line spans 1TB to 4TB. The 1TB model carries a 5-year quality assurance and an endurance figure of 3200TBW. TBW stands for terabytes written, a measure of the total data that can be written during the drive's life. 3200TBW is far more than most home users will write.

Who it suits

It suits owners of older laptops and desktops without an M.2 slot, people building a secondary storage drive, and anyone refreshing a machine for general use. If your computer has a free NVMe slot, a faster interface is available, but SATA remains a straightforward upgrade for older hardware.

What to check before you buy

  • Drive bay: confirm your device takes a 2.5-inch SATA drive and note the thickness it supports (this drive is about 7mm).
  • Interface: this is SATA, not NVMe. It won't work in an M.2 NVMe-only slot.
  • Cloning or fresh install: decide whether to clone your old drive or set up a fresh copy of Windows or macOS, and check what software or adapter you need.
  • Cables and brackets: desktops may need a SATA data cable, a power connector and a mounting bracket.
  • Console or device rules: check the device manual before using it in anything other than a PC or laptop.

The short version

  • A 1TB 2.5-inch internal SATA III SSD, model S109.
  • Rated at read speeds up to 560MB/s.
  • Independent DRAM cache and 3D NAND TLC.
  • End-to-end data path protection, LDPC ECC and power loss protection.
  • Endurance of 3200TBW with a 5-year quality assurance.
