The fanxiang PS2000W is a 1TB portable SSD about the size of a credit card, rated at up to 2,000 MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. It is meant for moving large files, editing video from an external drive, backups and extra game storage. The headline speed depends heavily on the port you plug it into, so here is what the numbers mean in practice.

What USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 means

USB naming is confusing, but the speeds behind the names are simple:

  • USB 3.2 Gen 1: 5 Gbps, typically around 400-450 MB/s for a drive.
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2: 10 Gbps, typically around 1,000 MB/s.
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2x2: 20 Gbps, using two 10 Gbps lanes over a USB-C cable.

fanxiang rates the PS2000W at up to 2,000 MB/s read and 1,800 MB/s write, and those figures need a Gen 2x2 port at the other end. Gen 2x2 ports are found mainly on some desktop motherboards and add-in cards. Many laptops, including many with Thunderbolt ports, don't support Gen 2x2, and there a drive like this typically falls back to 10 Gbps. It still works, just at around half the headline speed.

What 2,000 MB/s means for your files

At the full rated speed, reading a 10 GB video project would take only a few seconds. Real transfers are usually slower than the peak figure, especially with thousands of small files such as photos, because each file adds a little overhead. For large single files, such as video footage or disk images, speeds come closer to the rated figure.

Endurance: what 512TBW means

TBW stands for terabytes written: the total amount of data the drive is rated to have written to it over its life. fanxiang offers five years of after-sales service or 512TBW, whichever comes first. Spread over five years, 512TB works out to roughly 280 GB written every single day, far more than typical backup or editing use, so for most people the five-year period is the limit that matters.

Size, weight and build

The drive measures 3.35 x 1.97 x 0.34 inches (about 85 x 50 x 9 mm) and weighs 1.6 oz (about 45 g), so it fits in a pocket or a laptop sleeve. The body is aluminium alloy, which helps carry heat away during long transfers; fast SSDs can slow themselves down when they get hot, so heat dissipation matters for sustained speed. fanxiang also says the casing resists shocks and drops.

A 2-in-1 cable is included: one end plugs into the drive, and the other ends in either USB-C or USB-A, so it connects to both port types. The product images also show a soft storage pouch.

Compatibility

fanxiang lists support for Windows, Mac and Android devices, the iPhone 15/Pro, laptops and PCs, and consoles including the PS5, PS4 and Xbox. Phones and tablets often have slower USB-C ports than computers, so transfers there are usually well below the headline speed.

It also supports OTG, which lets a phone or tablet act as the host for a USB drive, and Windows To Go, a way of running a Windows installation from an external drive.

Who it suits

It suits video editors, photographers and other creators who move large files between machines, gamers who want extra storage for a console, and anyone who wants a compact, fast backup drive.

What to check before you buy

  • Your ports: check whether your computer has a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port; on Gen 2 ports, expect roughly half the rated speed.
  • Your devices: confirm how your console or phone handles external drives, since rules and speeds vary.
  • Formatting: some devices need the drive reformatted before use, which erases everything on it.
  • Capacity: 1TB holds a lot of documents and photos, but 4K video fills it quickly.
  • Backups: keep a second copy of anything important, as with any single drive.

The short version

  • A 1TB portable SSD rated up to 2,000 MB/s read and 1,800 MB/s write over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2.
  • Full speed needs a Gen 2x2 port; Gen 2 ports typically give around 1,000 MB/s.
  • 3.35 x 1.97 x 0.34 inches and 1.6 oz, with an aluminium alloy body.
  • A 2-in-1 USB-C to C/A cable; works with computers, phones and consoles, plus OTG and Windows To Go.
  • Five years of after-sales service or 512TBW.
