The Crucial T500 (model CT2000T500SSD5) is a 2TB internal solid-state drive in the M.2 NVMe format, sold here with a heatsink. It is aimed at gamers and creators who want fast storage for large game libraries, video projects and other heavy files, and Crucial lists it as compatible with the PlayStation 5.
What Gen4 NVMe means
NVMe is a protocol designed for flash storage connected over PCI Express, rather than the older SATA interface. Gen4 refers to the generation of PCIe the drive uses. Crucial says its speeds are 2x faster than Gen3, which fits the general picture: each PCIe generation roughly doubles the bandwidth of the last. The T500 is rated for sequential reads of up to 7,400MB/s and writes of up to 7,000MB/s.
Those are peak figures from the brand, usually measured under ideal conditions. Real-world speeds depend on the rest of your system, the type of file being moved and how full the drive is.
Random performance and IOPs
Sequential speed describes large files read in one go. Random IOPs (input/output operations per second) describe many small reads and writes, which is closer to what an operating system and games do all day. Crucial rates the T500 at up to 1.18 million random read IOPs and 1.44 million random write IOPs. High random figures typically help with how responsive a system feels when loading applications.
Gaming and DirectStorage
Crucial says the drive is enabled for Microsoft DirectStorage, a Windows technology that lets games load data from the SSD with less work for the processor. The brand claims games can load up to 16% faster, along with faster texture rendering and reduced CPU use. DirectStorage benefits appear only in games that support it, and the size of any gain varies.
Content creation
For creative work, Crucial says the T500 delivers up to 42% faster performance in content creation apps. Large video files, photo libraries and 3D scenes are the kind of workloads where fast storage matters most, since scrubbing through footage and saving big projects depend on how quickly data moves. The drive uses TLC NAND, a common type of flash that stores three bits per cell, and Crucial cites a performance-to-power ratio up to 40% better.
The heatsink and PS5 use
Fast NVMe drives can get warm under sustained load, and a heatsink helps spread that heat. Crucial says this heatsink version is easy to install in a PlayStation 5, and that a non-heatsink version is also available. In a desktop or laptop, the heatsink may matter in a different way: some motherboards already have their own M.2 cover, which may not fit alongside it.
Who it suits
It suits people building or upgrading a PC with a free M.2 Gen4 slot, owners of a PS5 who want more storage, and creators who handle large files. At 3.1 x 0.9 x 0.4 inches (about 7.9 x 2.3 x 1 cm) and 0.1 lb, it is small.
What to check before you buy
- Slot type: confirm your device has an M.2 slot that supports NVMe and, ideally, PCIe Gen4. It will usually work in a Gen3 slot, but at lower speeds.
- Clearance: the heatsink adds height, so check the space above the slot in your PC or console, and follow the console maker's installation guidance.
- Cooling setup: if your motherboard has its own heatsink, check that both won't clash.
- Operating system: DirectStorage features need a compatible Windows setup and supported games.
- What's in the box: the listing mentions a one-month software trial offer; check its terms and eligibility yourself.
