The Crucial T500 1TB is an internal M.2 solid-state drive that uses the PCIe Gen4 NVMe interface. It replaces or adds to the main storage in a desktop or laptop, with faster file loading than a hard drive or a SATA SSD. Crucial describes it as aimed at gaming and content creation.
What Gen4 NVMe means
NVMe is a protocol designed for flash storage, and it runs over the PCIe bus rather than the older SATA connection. Gen4 refers to the PCIe 4.0 generation, which has twice the bandwidth per lane of Gen3. Crucial says the T500 is up to twice as fast as Gen3 drives.
The drive uses the M.2 form factor, a small stick that fits straight into a slot on the motherboard or in a laptop. It measures about 3.1 x 0.9 inches (80 x 22 mm), the common "2280" size, and is very light.
Reading the speed figures
Crucial lists sequential reads up to 7,300MB/s and writes up to 6,800MB/s. Random reads and writes are up to 1.15 million and 1.44 million IOPs (input/output operations per second).
- Sequential speeds matter when moving large files such as video, game installs and backups.
- Random IOPs matter for everyday responsiveness, such as opening applications and loading many small files.
These are "up to" figures measured under the brand's test conditions. Real results depend on your system, the slot and how full the drive is.
Gaming: DirectStorage
The listing says the T500 is enabled for Microsoft DirectStorage, a Windows technology that lets compatible games load assets from the SSD to the graphics card with less CPU work. Crucial says games can load up to 16% faster and that the drive offers faster texture renders and reduced CPU use. The gains depend on the game supporting DirectStorage.
Content creation
Crucial says the drive gives up to 42% faster performance in content-creation apps. That is a brand claim for particular workloads. In practice, a fast SSD mainly shortens file imports, exports, scratch-disk work and project loading in photo, video and 3D programs.
Efficiency and memory type
The description says the drive uses TLC NAND flash, which stores three bits per cell and is the common choice for balancing speed and endurance. Crucial claims up to a 40% performance-to-power ratio improvement, meaning more work for the energy used. That can help laptop battery life, though the effect varies.
Capacity
This model holds 1TB. The range goes up to 2TB, according to the description.
Who it suits
It suits desktop builders and gamers with a PCIe Gen4-capable motherboard, creators with large project files, and laptop owners whose machine has a free M.2 slot that accepts NVMe drives. If your system only has SATA connections or a Gen3 slot, the drive may work (check the manual) but won't reach its top speeds.
What to check before you buy
- M.2 slot type: confirm that your device has a 2280 M.2 slot that supports NVMe, not just SATA.
- PCIe generation: Gen4 speeds need a Gen4 slot; older slots will limit speed.
- Heat: fast drives warm up. Check whether your motherboard or laptop has a heatsink or a heat-shield.
- Space: check clearance in the slot, especially in compact laptops.
- Backups: clone or back up your data before migrating.
- Warranty and endurance: check the terms with the brand.
The short version
- A 1TB M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD.
- Sequential reads and writes up to 7,300/6,800MB/s; random up to 1.15M/1.44M IOPs.
- DirectStorage support for compatible games.
- TLC NAND and a stated improvement in performance per watt.
- Needs a free NVMe-capable M.2 slot, ideally Gen4.
