The Crucial P3 Plus 2TB (model CT2000P3PSSD8) is an internal solid state drive in the M.2 format. It uses the NVMe protocol over a PCIe Gen4 x4 connection, and Crucial rates it for sequential reads up to 5,000MB/s. It is meant for desktops and laptops with a compatible M.2 slot.
What PCIe Gen4 NVMe means
NVMe is the protocol modern SSDs use to talk to the rest of the computer over PCIe lanes, rather than the older SATA interface. SATA drives top out at roughly 550MB/s in practice, while a PCIe Gen4 x4 link can carry several times that. Crucial says the P3 Plus performs up to 43% faster than the fastest Gen3 NVMe SSDs.
The drive is also backward compatible with Gen3 systems, according to Crucial. In a Gen3 slot it typically works but is limited to that slot's lower bandwidth.
Reading the speed numbers
Crucial lists:
- Sequential reads up to 5,000MB/s and writes up to 4,200MB/s
- Random read/write up to 680K/850K IOPS
Sequential speeds describe moving large files, such as video or game installs. IOPS describe small random operations, which matter for booting, loading applications and multitasking. These are "up to" figures measured under the maker's test conditions, so everyday results are usually lower.
Write acceleration and thermal protection
Crucial says the drive includes dynamic write acceleration, which typically means part of the drive's NAND is used as a fast buffer for incoming writes. It also lists adaptive thermal protection, which generally slows the drive to keep temperatures in check. The P3 Plus is built with Micron 3D NAND.
Capacity and endurance
This listing is the 2TB version; Crucial notes capacities up to 4TB in the line. It rates the drive at an MTTF of more than 1.5 million hours. MTTF is a statistical reliability figure, not a prediction of how long one drive will last, so back up important data regardless.
Who it suits
Crucial positions the P3 Plus for personal use, gaming and business. Typical uses are a main system drive, a game library or a working drive for large files. A 2TB size gives room for an operating system plus a sizeable library.
What to check before you buy
- Slot type: confirm your device has an M.2 slot that accepts NVMe drives, not SATA only.
- Length: the 2280 size is the common standard, but check your motherboard or laptop manual.
- Generation: a Gen3 slot will work but won't reach the full rated speeds.
- Cooling: some boards include an M.2 heatsink; check clearance in a laptop.
- Consoles and other devices: check the device maker's list of supported SSDs.
- Data: plan how you'll migrate or clone your existing drive.
