The CAPERAVE CU17 is a 17.3-inch portable monitor with a 4K (3840 x 2160) screen. It acts as a second display for a laptop, PC, tablet or games console, and weighs just 2.2 lb (about 1 kg). It is thin and light enough to slip into a bag with a laptop.
Screen and resolution
The panel is IPS with an anti-glare finish. IPS panels typically keep colour and contrast steady from wide viewing angles. At 17.3 inches, 3840 x 2160 packs in a lot of pixels, so text and images look sharp. The listing gives the brightness as 500 nits in its title and "400+" in its feature text, so confirm the figure before relying on it outdoors. CAPERAVE also lists blue light reduction and flicker-free technology.
Colour
CAPERAVE says the monitor has HDR enhancements, 100% Adobe RGB coverage (the listing also writes sRGB) and 16.7 million colours. Wide colour coverage matters most for photo and video editing. Check the specifications to see which standard is meant.
Connections
Two USB-C ports and a standard HDMI port are provided. With a single USB-C cable, the monitor can take both power and the video signal, but only if your device's USB-C port supports Thunderbolt 3 or USB 3.1 DisplayPort Alt Mode, as CAPERAVE notes. Without that, you'll need HDMI plus separate power. CAPERAVE lists laptops, PCs, MacBooks, iPads, PS5/PS4, Xbox and Switch as compatible.
Display modes
Three modes are listed: duplicate, extend and second-screen. Duplicate mirrors your main display, which suits presentations. Extend adds desktop space for extra windows.
Build, stand and speakers
The body is aluminium with slim bezels. A built-in adjustable kickstand sets the viewing angle without a separate stand, and a protective sleeve is included for travel. The monitor is about 15.6 x 9.6 inches (39.6 x 24.4 cm) and 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) thick. Speakers are built in, although small speakers generally suit casual use more than critical listening.
Who it suits
It suits remote workers, travellers and students who want a second screen away from a desk, and console players wanting a bigger display. Creative workers may value the colour coverage.
What to check before you buy
- USB-C support: check that your device's port can send video and supply power.
- Power: a 4K screen draws more power, so check the manual and whether a wall adapter is needed.
- Graphics: your device must be able to output 4K, or it will run at a lower resolution.
- Brightness and colour specs: confirm the figures if they matter to your work.
- Cables and sleeve: check what is in the box.
- Size: make sure you have bag space for a 17.3-inch panel.
