The ASUS ZenScreen MB17AHG is a 17.3-inch portable monitor that adds a second screen to a laptop without needing a desk-sized display. It is only 7 mm thick and weighs 2.8 lb (about 1.3 kg), so it travels in a laptop bag. Here is what its specs mean and what to confirm before you plug it in.

A 17.3-inch Full HD IPS panel

The panel is Full HD, which means 1920 x 1080 pixels, on an IPS display. IPS panels typically keep colours and brightness consistent when you view them from the side, which matters for a screen that sits beside a laptop at an angle. At 17.3 inches, Full HD gives a pixel density similar to a standard desktop monitor of that class, so text is readable without scaling.

ASUS says the display is designed for hybrid work: keep email, chat or reference documents on the second screen while the main task fills the laptop.

What 144 Hz and FreeSync Premium mean

Refresh rate is how many times per second the picture is redrawn. Most office monitors run at 60 Hz. At 144 Hz, ASUS says the monitor delivers smoother, more fluid motion, which is most noticeable in fast games, scrolling and moving a cursor around.

FreeSync Premium is AMD's adaptive-sync standard. It lets the screen match its refresh rate to the frames a graphics chip is producing, which typically reduces tearing and stutter. It needs a compatible graphics chip and a source that can deliver a high refresh rate over the cable you use, so a laptop's output limits matter.

Ports and cabling

ASUS lists two full-function USB-C ports, one on each side, plus an HDMI port and an earphone jack. Putting a USB-C port on either side makes it easier to route the cable to whichever side your laptop's port is on.

A "full-function" USB-C port generally means it can carry both video and power. In practice, a single USB-C cable can often supply the picture and power the monitor from a laptop, but only if the laptop's USB-C port supports video output (usually through DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt). Laptops without that, or with only a basic data port, need the HDMI connection and a separate power source.

The L-shaped kickstand and tripod mounting

An integrated L-shaped kickstand props the screen up at a suitable height, so it can sit next to a laptop as an extender. ASUS says it works in landscape or portrait orientation, and portrait is handy for long documents, code or web pages. The listing also describes the monitor as tripod mountable, which suits setups where a stand is not practical.

Who it suits

It suits people who work between a desk, a café and a client site, students with a single laptop, and anyone who wants a second screen that can be put away. A thin portable panel is not a replacement for a full-size desktop monitor with a height-adjustable stand, but it is much easier to carry.

What to check before you buy

  • Laptop ports: confirm that a USB-C port on your laptop supports video output, or that you have HDMI available.
  • Power: check whether your laptop can power the monitor over USB-C, and how that affects its battery life.
  • Refresh rate: 144 Hz needs a source and cable that can deliver it; otherwise the monitor runs at a lower rate.
  • Cables and accessories: check what is in the box and whether you need a longer or different cable.
  • Desk space: a 17.3-inch screen with a kickstand needs some depth; measure the space, especially on a tray table.
  • Bundled offers: any software trial mentioned in a listing may have expired, so check the current terms.
