The ASUS VZ279HE is a 27-inch Full HD monitor with an ultra-slim body and a frameless design. It is a straightforward screen for office work, study, streaming video and general home computing, and its narrow edges suit setups with more than one display.

A Full HD IPS panel

The resolution is 1920 x 1080, known as Full HD. On a 27-inch panel that gives a comfortable amount of workspace for documents, spreadsheets and web pages, though pixels are larger than on a higher-resolution screen of the same size, so fine text is less sharp.

The panel uses IPS technology, which ASUS says offers a 178° viewing angle. In general, IPS panels keep their colour and brightness more consistently when you look at them from the side or from above than many other panel types do. That matters when two people look at the screen together or when a monitor sits slightly off-axis.

Ultra-slim and frameless

The listing describes the profile as only 7mm thick at its thinnest, and the screen has a frameless design that ASUS calls suitable for multi-monitor use. With very narrow borders, two or three screens placed side by side present a more continuous picture, with a less visible gap between them. The monitor is black and weighs about 8.6 lb (roughly 3.9 kg).

Inputs

The monitor has HDMI and D-Sub (VGA) inputs. HDMI covers most current laptops, desktops, game consoles and streaming devices. D-Sub is an older analogue connection still found on some office computers and older equipment. ASUS lists the signal frequency as 24 to 83 kHz horizontal and 50 to 75 Hz vertical for both analogue and digital signals. The listing also mentions a side compartment where a UK plug is stored, so the plug type varies by version.

Flicker-free and low blue light modes

ASUS says the monitor carries TÜV Rheinland certification for flicker-free backlighting and low blue light. These are display features: flicker-free means the backlight brightness is controlled without rapid flickering, and low blue light settings reduce the amount of blue in the picture, which makes the colours look warmer. They are settings rather than any promise about your eyes or health.

Who it suits

It suits home offices, student desks, shared family computers and anyone who wants a larger screen than a laptop provides at a conventional resolution. It is less suited to competitive gaming or colour-critical design work, where higher refresh rates or wider colour coverage are usually wanted.

What to check before you buy

  • Ports: confirm that your computer has HDMI or VGA output, and note that the listing doesn't mention DisplayPort or a USB hub.
  • Stand adjustment: the listing doesn't describe height adjustment, so check the stand's tilt options against your desk and chair.
  • Mounting: the listing doesn't state VESA mounting, so check the manual or specifications if you want to wall mount it.
  • Plug type: confirm the power plug suits your region.
  • Resolution: decide whether 1080p on 27 inches suits your viewing distance.
  • Audio: the listing doesn't mention speakers, so you may need your own.
