The ASUS VY249HGR is a 23.8-inch Full HD (1080p) IPS monitor with a 120Hz refresh rate. ASUS describes it as a monitor for work, e-learning, entertainment and casual gaming. It's a straightforward desk display with smoother motion than a standard 60Hz screen and a few built-in comfort settings.
The panel: IPS and Full HD
The screen is 23.8 inches at 1920 x 1080. IPS panels are generally known for wide viewing angles and steady colour when seen from the side, which helps if you share the screen or sit off-centre. At this size, 1080p gives reasonably sharp text and images, though higher-resolution monitors look finer at the same size.
What 120Hz and 1ms MPRT mean
Refresh rate is how often the screen updates each second. ASUS lists 120Hz (OC), where "OC" indicates that the rate is reached by overclocking the panel, so you may need to enable it in the monitor's menu and your computer's display settings. Compared with 60Hz, 120Hz typically makes scrolling, cursor movement and video look smoother. To use it fully your computer's graphics and cable must support the rate.
ASUS also lists SmoothMotion technology and a 1ms MPRT (moving picture response time). MPRT measures perceived motion blur, and it isn't the same as grey-to-grey response time, so don't compare the two numbers directly. ASUS says these features reduce trailing and keep video clear.
Adaptive Sync
Adaptive Sync lets the monitor match its refresh rate to the frame rate your graphics card produces. ASUS says it delivers fluid, artifact-free visuals at any frame rate, which reduces tearing in games. Your graphics hardware needs to support the standard, so check this if you plan to game.
Comfort and control features
The monitor includes ASUS Eye Care Plus technology, with a blue-light filter and flicker-free backlighting. ASUS says its Rest Reminder helps you manage your screen time. These are software settings you can adjust to taste, and good habits such as regular breaks and a well-set-up desk matter as much as any monitor feature.
ASUS DisplayWidget Center lets you change monitor settings from your computer through an on-screen interface, instead of using the physical buttons.
Size, weight and what's in the box
The monitor measures about 21.3 inches wide and 15.6 inches tall with its stand (about 54 x 40 cm), and weighs 7.5 lb (about 3.4 kg). The box contents listed are:
- an HDMI cable
- an L-shaped screwdriver
- a power cord
- a warranty card
- a quick start guide
The listing mentions a three-year warranty. A promotional software offer was listed with an end date in 2025, so don't count on it.
Who it suits
It suits home offices, students and everyday users who want a bright, smooth, Full HD screen with a faster refresh rate than the typical office monitor. It's also fine for casual gaming. People who want very high frame rates for competitive games, or a higher resolution for design work, may want something else.
What to check before you buy
- Ports: confirm your computer has an input matching the supplied cable and the 120Hz requirements.
- Graphics support: check that your computer can output 120Hz at 1080p.
- Desk space: check the stand's footprint and whether you need a VESA wall or arm mount.
- Stand adjustments: read the manual to see whether height or tilt can be changed.
- Warranty: check the terms and what they cover.
