The ASUS VY229HF is a 22-inch desktop monitor with a Full HD IPS panel and a 100Hz refresh rate. It is aimed at study, office work, video and casual gaming, and it adds screen-comfort features such as a blue light filter and a flicker-free backlight.

Panel, size and resolution

ASUS lists a 22-inch class panel with a 21.45-inch viewable area at Full HD (1920 x 1080). At this size, Full HD gives a sharp enough picture for documents, web pages and video at normal desk distance. The panel uses IPS technology, which generally offers wider viewing angles and steadier colour than VA or TN panels when seen from the side.

What 100Hz and 1ms mean

Refresh rate is how many times the picture updates each second. Many basic monitors run at 60Hz, so 100Hz gives noticeably smoother scrolling and movement, which is also useful for casual games. ASUS rates the monitor at 1ms MPRT (moving picture response time) with its SmoothMotion technology, which the brand says reduces tracing and ghosting behind moving objects. MPRT is a different measure from grey-to-grey response, so treat the two figures as separate.

Adaptive Sync

Adaptive Sync lets the monitor change its refresh rate to match what a compatible graphics card is producing. Typically, that cuts tearing and stutter when frame rates move up and down. It needs a compatible graphics card and connection, so check your own computer.

Eye Care Plus features

ASUS groups several comfort features under Eye Care Plus: a blue light filter, a flicker-free backlight and a Rest Reminder that helps you keep track of screen time. A Color Augmentation mode is included, which ASUS says helps users who have difficulty telling colours apart. The company also describes a treatment on the bezels and hotkeys intended to last. These are the brand's own descriptions, and individual comfort varies from person to person; breaks away from the screen and good lighting still matter.

Stand and what's in the box

The stand tilts. If you want height adjustment or rotation, you would need a separate monitor arm, so check the mounting options in the manual. The monitor measures about 19.4 x 14.2 x 6.5 inches (49 x 36 x 16.5 cm) with the stand and weighs 6 lb (2.7 kg). In the box are an HDMI cable, a power cord, a warranty card and a quick start guide. ASUS lists a three-year warranty.

Who it suits

It suits home offices, students, shared family computers and second screens, and it works for people who want smooth video or casual gaming without moving to a high-refresh model. Competitive gamers or colour-critical professionals may want to look at the specifications of other types.

What to check before you buy

  • Ports: the box includes HDMI; check that your computer has a matching output.
  • Graphics card: check support for Adaptive Sync if you want it.
  • Desk space and height: the stand only tilts, so check your viewing height or consider a separate arm.
  • Resolution: Full HD at 22 inches is sharp for most tasks, but check that it is enough for the work you do.
  • Colour work: an IPS panel is useful, but check the colour coverage if accuracy matters.
  • Promotions: any bundled software offers listed have expiry dates, so don't rely on them.
