The ASUS VP348QGL is a 34-inch ultrawide monitor with a 21:9 screen shape and a 3440x1440 resolution. It's aimed at gaming, but the extra width also suits spreadsheets, timelines and several windows side by side. Here is what its main specs mean in practice.
What 21:9 and 3440x1440 mean
A typical widescreen monitor is 16:9. A 21:9 panel is wider, which is why ultrawide monitors can replace two side-by-side screens without a bezel in the middle. At 3440x1440 (often called UWQHD), the screen has more pixels than Full HD, so text and detail are sharper at 34 inches than a Full HD panel of the same size would be. Games and videos that support 21:9 fill the screen; others may show black bars at the sides.
75Hz and Adaptive Sync
The refresh rate is 75Hz, a little above the standard 60Hz of most office monitors. The listing also names Adaptive Sync/FreeSync. These technologies let the monitor match its refresh rate to the frames a compatible graphics card is producing, which typically reduces screen tearing. Check your graphics card's documentation for which sync modes it supports over each connection.
HDR-10 support
ASUS lists HDR-10, a common format for high dynamic range content. In general, how much a monitor benefits depends on its brightness and contrast, so treat the label as format support rather than a promise of cinema-like HDR. Check ASUS's full specification sheet for brightness and contrast numbers.
Shadow Boost and Eye Care
Shadow Boost is ASUS's feature for brightening dark areas of an image, so details in shadowy game scenes are easier to see without over-brightening the rest. ASUS also lists Eye Care technology, with a blue-light filter and flicker-free backlighting. These are display settings, and you can choose how to use them.
Connections, speakers and stand
The monitor has DisplayPort and HDMI inputs and built-in 2W stereo speakers, which are handy for basic sound without extra equipment, though separate speakers or a headset typically sound fuller. The stand offers tilt, swivel and height adjustment, so you can set the screen to a comfortable height and angle.
It measures about 9.2 x 32.6 x 21.5 inches (23 x 83 x 55 cm) with the stand and weighs 26.3 lb (about 12 kg). Allow desk width for the 32.6-inch span.
Who it suits
- Gamers who want a wide field of view in supported games.
- People who work with wide documents, spreadsheets or editing timelines.
- Anyone who prefers one wide screen to a two-monitor setup.
What to check before you buy
- Desk space: the monitor is about 83 cm wide, so check your desk and any monitor arm.
- Graphics power: 3440x1440 needs more from the graphics card than Full HD.
- Ports: confirm that your computer has a matching DisplayPort or HDMI output, and which refresh rates each supports.
- Game support: not every game supports 21:9.
- What's in the box: check the cables supplied and the manual's setup steps.
