The ASUS VP229HE is a 21.5-inch Full HD monitor for desks where space is limited. It uses an IPS panel with narrow borders, runs at up to 75Hz and takes both HDMI and VGA connections. It suits home offices, study areas and general computing.

Full HD on an IPS panel

The display resolution is 1920 x 1080 on an LED-backlit IPS panel. At 21.5 inches, that resolution gives a sharp picture for documents, web pages and video. IPS panels generally keep colour and brightness consistent from the side, and ASUS lists a 178-degree viewing angle. That helps when two people look at the same screen or when you sit off-centre.

What 75Hz and Adaptive-Sync mean

The refresh rate is the number of times the picture updates each second. Many basic monitors run at 60Hz; up to 75Hz is a small step up that typically makes motion and scrolling look somewhat smoother. Adaptive-Sync (FreeSync on AMD) lets the monitor match its refresh rate to the frames the graphics card produces, which helps avoid tearing and stutter in games and video.

ASUS says the monitor works with Adaptive-Sync on NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 series, GTX 16 series, RTX 20 series and newer graphics cards, and with FreeSync on AMD Radeon cards.

Eye Care features

ASUS Eye Care is the brand's name for a set of display features. ASUS describes TÜV Rheinland-certified Flicker-free and Low Blue Light technologies, a Color Augmentation mode for better colour differentiation, and a Rest Reminder for long viewing sessions. TÜV Rheinland is an independent testing body, and the certification applies to the specific features named.

Connections

The monitor has an HDMI (v1.4) port and a VGA port. HDMI is the usual choice for modern laptops and desktop graphics cards, while VGA lets you connect older computers. No DisplayPort input is listed, so check your computer's outputs.

Design and mounting

The frameless design keeps the borders thin, which looks tidy and works well beside a second monitor. The monitor is VESA wall mountable, so it can go on a wall bracket or a monitor arm. With its stand, it measures about 14.3 x 19.3 x 7.8 inches (36 x 49 x 20 cm) and weighs 6.4 lb (about 2.9 kg).

What to check before you buy

  • Whether a 21.5-inch screen at 1080p is large enough for your work.
  • The VESA pattern and bracket size, if you plan to wall-mount it.
  • Whether the stand adjusts to the height you need, as the listing does not describe stand adjustment.
  • Whether you need built-in speakers, which the listing does not mention.
