The ASUS VL249HE is a 23.8-inch Full HD monitor with an IPS panel, a 75Hz refresh rate and a slim, frameless design. It is a general-purpose screen for home, study and office desks, with a few extras for casual gaming. Here is what its specs mean and what to confirm before using it.

IPS panel and viewing angles

The panel uses IPS (in-plane switching) technology, which ASUS pairs with 178° wide viewing angles. In general, IPS screens keep their colour and brightness more consistently when you look at them from the side or from above than many other panel types. That is handy if two people share a screen, if you move around the desk, or if you use the monitor for presentations.

The resolution is Full HD, 1920 x 1080, on a 23.8-inch screen. That is a very common combination, and text and video typically look clear at normal desk distance.

75Hz and Adaptive-Sync

A standard monitor refreshes 60 times per second. The VL249HE goes up to 75Hz, and ASUS says it supports Adaptive-Sync/FreeSync. Adaptive-Sync matches the monitor's refresh rate to the frame rate from a compatible graphics card, which reduces tearing and choppy motion in games. A 75Hz screen is a modest step up from 60Hz, and it is not aimed at competitive high-refresh players. You also need a compatible graphics card and the feature switched on to use it.

ASUS adds its GamePlus tools, which include an on-screen crosshair, a timer, an FPS counter and display alignment. These are overlays that can be turned on from the monitor's menu.

Eye Care features

The listing says ASUS Eye Care technology includes TÜV Rheinland-certified Flicker-free and Low Blue Light features. In practical terms, flicker-free backlighting avoids the rapid brightness changes of some displays, and a low blue light mode shifts the colour balance toward warmer tones. Both are settings that change how the screen looks; check the manual for how to switch between modes.

Design, tilt and mounting

The frameless design has thin bezels on the edges, so more of the front is screen and multiple monitors sit closer together side by side. The stand adjusts for tilt from +20° to -10°. It does not list height, swivel or pivot adjustment, so if you need those, a VESA mount is an option. The back is VESA wall-mountable, and ASUS says it helps save desktop space. Check the manual for the exact VESA pattern before buying an arm or bracket.

Package dimensions are about 21.3 x 15.6 x 8.2 inches, and the weight is 8.8 lb.

Connections

The inputs are HDMI and VGA. HDMI is the usual digital connection for modern computers, consoles and streaming boxes. VGA is an older analogue connector, still found on some older PCs and office equipment. There is no DisplayPort on this model, so check your computer's outputs.

What's in the box

ASUS lists a VGA cable, an HDMI cable, a power cord and adaptor, a warranty card and a quick start guide.

Who it suits

It suits home offices, students, families and anyone setting up a second screen. It also works as a casual gaming monitor for those who want adaptive sync without a high refresh rate. People who need a height-adjustable stand, DisplayPort or a very high refresh rate would want to look at other models.

What to check before you buy

  • Your computer's ports: make sure it has HDMI or VGA output.
  • Stand adjustments: only tilt is listed, so check your desk and seating height.
  • Graphics card: confirm Adaptive-Sync/FreeSync compatibility if you want to use it.
  • Mounting: if using a wall mount or arm, check the VESA size in the manual.
  • Desk space: measure the width and depth, including the stand.
