The ASUS VA279QG is a 27-inch Full HD monitor with an IPS panel, a 120Hz refresh rate and a frameless design. It is meant for general desk use, office work, streaming and casual gaming, and it has a wide set of inputs, including HDMI, DisplayPort and VGA, so it works with newer and older computers alike.
Panel and resolution
The screen is 27 inches with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (Full HD). At that screen size, the pixel density is lower than on a 1440p or 4K model, so text and fine detail are a little less sharp up close, but Full HD is easy for almost any computer or console to drive. The panel is IPS, and ASUS lists a 178° viewing angle. IPS panels generally keep colour and brightness consistent when you look from the side. ASUS also lists 99% sRGB coverage, which describes how much of the standard sRGB colour range the screen can show.
What 120Hz and 1ms MPRT mean
Refresh rate is how many times per second the picture updates. A typical office monitor runs at 60Hz, so 120Hz shows twice as many updates, which makes scrolling and movement look smoother. ASUS calls its implementation SmoothMotion. The 1ms figure is MPRT (moving picture response time), a measure related to motion blur. It is not the same as grey-to-grey response time, so compare it only with other MPRT figures. Adaptive-Sync enables variable refresh rate (VRR), which lets the monitor match the frame rate of a compatible graphics card and reduces screen tearing.
Eye Care features
ASUS says the monitor carries TÜV Rheinland certification for its Flicker-free and Low Blue Light technologies. These are the brand's own feature descriptions, and the settings are managed through the monitor's menu. ASUS DisplayWidget Center, a desktop utility, lets you change monitor settings from your computer instead of using the buttons on the panel.
Connections, speakers and mounting
The inputs are HDMI, DisplayPort and VGA, plus an earphone jack. VGA is an older analogue connection, useful if you need to connect an older computer or projector. The monitor has built-in speakers, which are handy for basic audio, though many people prefer separate speakers or a headset for music and games. It is VESA wall-mountable, so you can use a monitor arm or wall bracket to save desk space. The box includes an HDMI cable, a power cord, a quick start guide and a warranty card. The listing also mentions a 3-year warranty.
Size and weight
The monitor measures about 24.2 inches wide and 17.6 inches high with the stand, and it weighs 8.3 lb (about 3.8 kg).
Who it suits
It suits home offices, students and general users who want a larger screen than a laptop display provides, and casual gamers who want smoother motion than a 60Hz screen offers. People who need 4K detail or very high refresh rates should look at higher-spec monitors.
What to check before you buy
- Your computer's outputs: confirm it has HDMI, DisplayPort or VGA, and that the cable you plan to use is the right type.
- Desk space: about 24 inches of width with the stand; check it fits.
- Resolution: 1080p on 27 inches is fine for many uses, but check it suits your tasks.
- Mounting: if you plan to use a monitor arm, check the VESA pattern in the manual.
- Refresh rate: your computer or graphics card needs to be able to output 120Hz to take advantage of it.
