The ASUS VA24DQF is a 24-inch-class monitor with a 23.8-inch viewable IPS panel at Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. It has a frameless design on the sides and top, a 100Hz refresh rate, and ASUS's Eye Care features. It is built for everyday desk work, with enough speed for casual gaming.

Panel and picture

The panel is IPS, a technology typically known for consistent colour and wide viewing angles. ASUS lists 178° viewing angles, which means the image stays readable when you look at the screen from the side or when two people share a view. At 23.8 inches, Full HD gives a pixel density that most people find sharp at normal desk distance.

The frameless design reduces the bezel, which is helpful if you plan to set up two monitors side by side, since the gap between pictures is smaller.

What 100Hz and 1ms MPRT mean

Refresh rate is how many times per second the screen redraws. The common 60Hz standard shows 60 images a second, and 100Hz shows 100. Higher rates generally make scrolling and moving objects look smoother. ASUS calls its implementation SmoothMotion.

The 1ms MPRT figure is a different measure from grey-to-grey response time. MPRT (moving picture response time) describes motion blur as the eye perceives it, and manufacturers usually reach very low numbers by using motion-blur-reduction features. Check the manual to see how it is enabled and whether it can be used alongside variable refresh.

The monitor supports Adaptive-Sync (variable refresh rate, or VRR). With a compatible graphics card, the monitor matches its refresh rate to the frames being sent, which helps avoid screen tearing and stutter in games.

Eye Care features

ASUS says the monitor carries TÜV Rheinland certification for Flicker-free and Low Blue Light technologies. Flicker-free means the backlight is not dimmed through rapid pulsing, and Low Blue Light settings reduce the blue part of the screen's output. ASUS says these are meant to give a comfortable viewing experience; this page makes no health claims beyond that.

Connections and mounting

The ports are HDMI, DisplayPort and an earphone jack. Many users will want to confirm which HDMI version is fitted, since that can affect the refresh rate you get over HDMI compared with DisplayPort; the manual spells it out. The monitor is VESA wall-mountable, so you can attach it to a monitor arm or wall bracket to free up desk space. It weighs about 7.7 lb (3.5 kg) with the stand.

Who it suits

This monitor is aimed at home offices, students and general computer users who want a straightforward Full HD screen with a smoother refresh rate than the standard 60Hz. It suits people who read and write for long stretches, and it also works for casual gaming. If you need very high resolution, extra-wide screen space or colour-critical work, you would normally look at a different class of monitor.

What to check before you buy

  • Your computer or console has HDMI or DisplayPort, and a suitable cable (check what comes in the box).
  • Your graphics card can drive 100Hz and supports Adaptive-Sync if you want variable refresh.
  • The desk has room for a stand with 24 x 8 x 10 inches overall, or you have a VESA mount and know your pattern.
  • You don't need built-in speakers; the listing mentions only an earphone jack.
  • Whether Full HD is enough resolution at this size for the way you work.
