The ASUS VA249QG is a 23.8-inch Full HD monitor with an IPS panel and a 120Hz refresh rate. ASUS positions it as an Eye Care gaming monitor, and it also works as a general desk display for office tasks, films and browsing. This page explains what the main specs mean.

Size, resolution and panel type

The screen measures 23.8 inches diagonally with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080. At this size, Full HD gives a sharp image at normal desk distance, and it is easy for most graphics cards and laptops to drive. The panel is IPS, which ASUS rates at a 178° viewing angle. In general, IPS screens keep colours consistent when you view them off-centre, which helps if two people look at the same screen or if you use it at an angle.

The design is frameless, meaning the bezels are very thin on the visible sides. That looks tidy and works well when two monitors sit side by side.

What 120Hz and 1ms MPRT mean

Refresh rate is how many times per second the picture updates. A typical office monitor runs at 60Hz; 120Hz doubles that, so motion looks smoother when you move the mouse, scroll or play a fast game. ASUS calls its implementation SmoothMotion.

The 1ms MPRT figure refers to moving picture response time. MPRT describes how long a moving object appears blurred to the eye, and it differs from grey-to-grey response times, so the two numbers aren't directly comparable. The brand says the combination delivers a seamless, tear-free experience.

Adaptive-Sync

The monitor supports Adaptive-Sync, a form of variable refresh rate (VRR). When a graphics card produces frames at an uneven pace, the screen adjusts its refresh rate to match rather than showing a torn picture. Whether VRR works depends on your graphics card, the cable and its drivers, so check your setup and the monitor's manual.

Connections

ASUS lists HDMI, DisplayPort and VGA inputs, plus an earphone jack. DisplayPort and HDMI cover most modern computers and consoles; VGA is the older analogue connector, useful for legacy equipment. For the full 120Hz refresh rate, check which input and cable supports it, as the manual describes.

Eye Care features

The description lists TÜV Rheinland-certified Flicker-free and Low Blue Light technologies and says they are meant to give a comfortable viewing experience.

Mounting and settings

The monitor is VESA wall-mountable, so it can be fixed to a wall or an arm to free up desk space. Dimensions are about 7.4 x 21.3 x 16.0 inches (19 x 54 x 41 cm), and it weighs 6.7 lb (about 3 kg). The ASUS DisplayWidget Center software lets you change monitor settings from your computer instead of the on-screen buttons.

Who it suits

It suits people who want a smooth 24-inch screen for gaming, study or office work, and those who want a second display for a laptop or console.

What to check before you buy

  • Ports: confirm your computer has HDMI, DisplayPort or VGA, and which cable you will use.
  • Refresh rate: check that your graphics card and cable support 120Hz.
  • Desk space: measure the stand, or plan for a VESA arm or wall mount.
  • Size and resolution: 23.8 inches at Full HD suits many desks, but some people prefer more pixels.
  • Warranty: check the terms for your region.
