The ASUS VA249HG is a 24-inch class desktop monitor with a 23.8-inch viewable IPS screen, Full HD resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It is a compact option for a desk, a study corner or a small home office, and it adds smoother motion than a typical 60Hz screen. Here is what its specifications mean.

A 23.8-inch Full HD IPS panel

The resolution is 1920 x 1080 across a 23.8-inch diagonal. Full HD is a good match for this size: the pixels are small enough for text to look reasonably crisp at normal desk distance. ASUS pairs the panel with a 178° wide viewing angle, which with IPS technology typically means colour and brightness stay consistent when you view from the side. ASUS also lists 99% sRGB coverage, which describes how much of the standard colour range used for web content and most everyday images the screen can display.

Understanding 120Hz and 1ms MPRT

Refresh rate is the number of times the picture updates each second. At 120Hz, the monitor redraws twice as often as a standard 60Hz display, so moving content, scrolling and cursor movement generally look smoother.

The 1ms MPRT figure (moving picture response time) relates to motion blur. It is measured differently from grey-to-grey response time, so it should not be compared directly with those numbers. ASUS markets the combination as SmoothMotion.

Adaptive-Sync

The monitor supports Adaptive-Sync, a form of variable refresh rate (VRR). With a compatible graphics card or console, the screen matches its refresh rate to the frames being output, which ASUS says helps remove tearing and choppy frame rates. Support on your device and the right setting must be enabled; check your manuals.

Ports, mounting and software

Connections are HDMI and VGA, plus an earphone jack. HDMI suits most laptops, consoles and current graphics cards; VGA is an older analogue standard for older computers. No DisplayPort input is listed.

The design is frameless, and the monitor is VESA wall-mountable if you prefer an arm or bracket. ASUS gives the dimensions as 7.5 x 21.3 x 16.1 inches including the stand, with a weight of 7.1 lb. The ASUS DisplayWidget Center software lets you adjust monitor settings from your computer rather than through on-screen buttons.

Eye Care features

ASUS places the monitor in its Eye Care range, with TÜV Rheinland-certified Flicker-free and Low Blue Light technologies. These are certification schemes related to how the backlight and colour output are managed.

What's in the box

An HDMI cable, a power cord, a quick start guide and a warranty card. ASUS lists a 3-year warranty.

Who it suits

It suits home offices, students, everyday browsing and video, and casual gaming. It is a natural step up for anyone moving from an older 60Hz monitor. It is less suited to people who need a USB-C or DisplayPort connection, or a higher resolution for detailed photo or video editing.

What to check before you buy

  • Ports: make sure your computer or console has an HDMI output.
  • Refresh rate: 120Hz needs a source that can output it through the cable you use.
  • Desk fit: the stand is about 21 inches wide; measure your space or plan a VESA mount.
  • Resolution: Full HD is standard, but if you edit photos or want more screen area, consider a higher resolution.
  • Warranty terms: check how the 3-year warranty applies in your region.
