ASUS USB-AX56 WiFi 6 USB Adapter: features, specs and who it suits
The ASUS USB-AX56 adds dual-band WiFi 6 (AX1800) to a Windows PC over USB, with an external antenna and cradle, MU-MIMO and WPA3. What the specs mean.

The ASUS USB-AX56 is a USB adapter that gives a laptop or desktop PC WiFi 6 (802.11ax). It is aimed at computers with older wireless hardware, or none at all, that would benefit from the newer standard without opening the case or replacing the machine.
What WiFi 6 and AX1800 mean
WiFi 6 is the name for the 802.11ax standard. ASUS says the adapter reaches speeds of up to 1800 Mbps. That is a combined theoretical figure across the two bands (2.4GHz and 5GHz), and ASUS itself notes that real throughput and coverage vary with network conditions, building materials and traffic. Actual speeds will also depend on your router and your internet connection, since a WiFi 6 adapter only reaches its full potential when paired with a WiFi 6 router.
Efficiency in busy networks
ASUS highlights OFDMA, MU-MIMO and BSS Coloring. In general terms:
- OFDMA lets a router split a channel and serve several devices at once, rather than one after another.
- MU-MIMO lets the router communicate with multiple devices simultaneously.
- BSS Coloring helps reduce interference from neighbouring networks that share a channel.
These features help most in homes and buildings with many connected devices. The adapter also lists 2x2 support (two antennas for sending and receiving), and beamforming, which focuses the signal toward a device.
Antenna and cradle
The USB-AX56 has an external antenna and a cradle. ASUS says this amplifies the signal. The cradle lets you place the adapter on a desk with the antenna raised, away from the back of a PC, where metal cases and cables can weaken the signal. It is a practical choice for a desktop under a desk.
Security and setup
The adapter supports WPA3, a newer wireless security standard with stronger authentication than WPA2. Your router must also support WPA3 for this to apply. ASUS describes the setup as plug-and-play, and lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported operating systems. Check whether you need to install a driver from the manufacturer, and whether it works with other operating systems before relying on it with them.
Size
It measures about 4.5 x 1.2 x 0.7 inches (11.4 x 3 x 1.8 cm) and weighs around 0.1 lb (about 45 g), light enough to carry with a laptop.
Who it suits
It suits anyone with a Windows PC on older WiFi (such as WiFi 4 or 5) who now has a WiFi 6 router, desktops without built-in wireless, and gamers or streamers who want a stronger wireless link than a built-in card provides. It makes less difference if your router doesn't support WiFi 6.
What to check before you buy
- Operating system: the listing names Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Your router: confirm it supports WiFi 6 to get the benefit, and WPA3 for the security feature.
- USB port: plan a free USB port, ideally one near the front or top of the computer so the antenna is well placed.
- Placement: use the cradle to keep the antenna clear of obstacles.
- Expectations: real speeds depend on the router, distance and walls.
The short version
- A USB WiFi 6 (802.11ax) adapter rated by ASUS at AX1800 speeds of up to 1800 Mbps.
- Dual band, 2x2, with OFDMA, MU-MIMO, BSS Coloring and beamforming.
- External antenna and cradle for a stronger signal.
- WPA3 security; plug-and-play on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Compact at about 0.1 lb (45 g).
