The ASUS USB-AX56 is a USB adapter that adds Wi-Fi 6 to a computer. It's for desktops without built-in wireless, and for older laptops whose Wi-Fi is slow or unreliable. You plug it in, and the computer can connect to a Wi-Fi 6 router. Here is what its specifications mean.
What AX1800 and Wi-Fi 6 mean
Wi-Fi 6 is the name for the 802.11ax standard. AX1800 is a combined speed class: roughly 1,200 Mbps on the 5 GHz band plus about 600 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band. Those are theoretical maximums for the two bands together, and a device never sees the total on one connection. Real speeds depend on the router, distance, walls and the other devices on the network.
Wi-Fi 6 is typically better than older standards when many devices share a network, and it works with older routers too, at their slower speeds.
Dual band and 2x2
The adapter is dual band, so it can use both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. In general, 2.4 GHz travels further through walls, and 5 GHz is faster at shorter range.
The 2x2 designation means two transmit and two receive streams. This is how an adapter reaches its rated speeds. Most adapters of this size use 2x2 as the practical maximum.
MU-MIMO and beamforming
The listing names two technologies:
- MU-MIMO lets a compatible router talk to several devices at once instead of one after another.
- Beamforming directs the signal toward the device rather than spreading it evenly, which typically helps at a distance.
Both depend on the router also supporting them.
Security and setup
The adapter supports WPA3, the current Wi-Fi security standard, which gives stronger protection than WPA2 when your router also supports it. ASUS describes the adapter as plug-and-play, but drivers may still be needed on some systems, so check the support page for your operating system.
Gaming and streaming
ASUS positions the adapter for gaming and streaming. For both, a stable connection and low delay matter as much as top speed. Placing the adapter on a short USB extension cable, away from the back of the case, usually improves the signal.
Who it suits
It suits desktop users with no Wi-Fi, laptop owners with an older built-in card, and anyone with a Wi-Fi 6 router who wants to use it fully. It may also help where a quick, removable upgrade is easier than opening up the computer.
What to check before you buy
- Router: you need a Wi-Fi 6 router to get Wi-Fi 6 speeds.
- USB port: use a USB 3.0 port to avoid limiting the speed.
- Operating system: check that drivers exist for your version of Windows or other systems.
- Placement: consider an extension cable for the best signal.
- Product details: the model code is 90IG06H0-MO0R00. Confirm that the packaging and specification sheet match the USB-AX56 you expect.
- What's in the box: check which accessories are included.
The short version
- A dual-band AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 adapter that connects by USB.
- 2x2 antennas, MU-MIMO and beamforming.
- WPA3 network security.
- Plug-and-play, aimed at gaming and streaming.
- Needs a Wi-Fi 6 router to reach its top speeds.
