The ASUS USB-AX55 Nano is a very small USB adapter that adds WiFi 6 (802.11ax) to a laptop or desktop PC. It suits a computer whose built-in wireless is older, or a desktop with no wireless at all. Here is what the main specs mean and what to confirm before you plug it in.

What WiFi 6 changes

WiFi 6 is the name for the 802.11ax standard. Compared with the older WiFi 5 (802.11ac), it is built to handle more devices at once, which matters in homes with many phones, speakers and smart gadgets. ASUS says the adapter gives a PC an "instant upgrade" to this standard through a USB port, and describes it as the first WiFi 6 USB adapter.

To get the full benefit you need a WiFi 6 router or access point. On an older router the adapter should still connect, but without the newer features.

The speed figures

The listing says the AX55 Nano reaches up to 2.4 Gbps on the 5 GHz band, using a wide 160 MHz channel and 1024-QAM modulation. A wider channel is like a wider road, carrying more data at once. 1024-QAM packs more bits into each signal, which helps when the connection is strong.

"AX1800" in the name is a combined, theoretical figure for both bands. Real-world speeds depend on the router, distance, walls, interference and the speed of your internet connection. ASUS's own disclaimer says actual throughput and coverage vary with network conditions and building materials.

OFDMA and MU-MIMO

These two features are about sharing the airtime. OFDMA splits a channel so several devices can be served in the same transmission, and MU-MIMO lets a router talk to more than one device at a time. ASUS says they give more stable and faster transmission in a high-density environment, such as a flat building or an office with lots of networks nearby. Both need support from the router as well.

Security

The adapter supports WPA3, the current WiFi security standard. In general, WPA3 uses stronger authentication than WPA2, and it only helps if your router is set to use it. Many routers can run in a mixed WPA2/WPA3 mode for older devices.

Size and compatibility

The adapter measures about 1.0 x 0.6 x 0.4 inches (roughly 2.5 x 1.5 x 1 cm) and is listed as essentially weightless. It's small enough to leave in a laptop's USB port. ASUS lists support for Windows 10 and Linux. Check the ASUS support page for the current driver list, your exact Windows version and the Linux kernel versions it works with.

Who it suits

It suits laptop owners who want newer wireless without opening the machine, desktop users with no wireless card, and anyone with a WiFi 6 router who wants to use its features on an older PC.

What to check before you buy

  • Your router: WiFi 6 speeds and features need a WiFi 6 router or access point.
  • Operating system: confirm your Windows or Linux version is supported and that a driver is available.
  • USB port: check which USB port type and version your computer has, as the adapter plugs in directly.
  • Placement: a port at the back of a desktop tower may be shielded by the case, and a USB extension cable can help if signal is weak.
  • Bands: the listing highlights 5 GHz; check the manual for 2.4 GHz support if you need it.

The short version

  • ASUS USB-AX55 Nano: a compact dual-band AX1800 WiFi 6 USB adapter.
  • Up to 2.4 Gbps on 5 GHz with 160 MHz channels and 1024-QAM, under ideal conditions.
  • OFDMA and MU-MIMO for busier networks.
  • WPA3 security support.
  • Listed for Windows 10 and Linux.
