The ASUS TUF Gaming X870E-PLUS WiFi7 is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 socket, built on the X870E chipset. It connects a Ryzen processor, DDR5 memory, drives and a graphics card, and it adds fast wireless and USB4 ports for a high-end desktop PC.
Socket and memory
The board uses the AMD AM5 socket and, ASUS says, supports Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series desktop processors. As with any board, check ASUS's support list for your exact chip and any BIOS version required.
It takes DDR5 memory with AEMP, ASUS's one-step memory profile feature that is meant to simplify getting memory to run at its rated speed.
Power delivery
For power, ASUS lists 16+2+1 power stages rated at 80A, an 8-layer PCB, 8+8 pin ProCool power connectors, alloy chokes and durable capacitors. In general, a stronger power design helps keep voltage steady when a high-core-count processor is working hard.
Storage and expansion
There are four M.2 slots: two PCIe 5.0 and two PCIe 4.0. PCIe 5.0 drives offer higher bandwidth than PCIe 4.0 ones, though they usually run hotter, which is why the board has an M.2 heatsink. The graphics slot is a PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlot with Q-Release Slim, a design that makes removing a graphics card easier.
Connectivity
ASUS lists Wi-Fi 7 with the Q-Antenna, Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet and two rear USB4 (40Gbps) Type-C ports. A front-panel USB 20Gbps Type-C connector supports up to 30W PD fast charging. Wi-Fi 7 gains only show with a Wi-Fi 7 router and compatible devices.
AI features and software
The listing names AI Overclocking, AI Cooling II, AI Networking II and AEMP, which ASUS says simplify setup and improve performance. Included software is ASUS DriverHub, ASUS GlideX, ASUS TUF PROTECTION and DTS Audio Processing. The "AI PC" wording is the brand's, and these features are about tuning and software rather than a separate piece of hardware.
Cooling and build-friendly touches
The board has an enlarged VRM heatsink, an M.2 heatsink, a chipset heatsink and hybrid fan headers, with Fan Xpert 4. For builders, M.2 Q-Latch, Q-LED, BIOS FlashBack and a pre-mounted I/O shield aim to make assembly easier. BIOS FlashBack lets you update the BIOS without a processor installed. Three Addressable RGB Gen 2 headers work with Aura Sync lighting.
Size
The listing gives 12.0 x 9.6 x 1.9 inches (about 30.5 x 24.4 x 4.8 cm) and a weight of 3.4 lb (about 1.5 kg), which is typical of ATX.
Who it suits
It suits builders assembling a new AM5 system who want PCIe 5.0 storage, plenty of M.2 slots and fast wireless.
What to check before you buy
- Processor: confirm your CPU is on the support list.
- Memory: AM5 needs DDR5, not DDR4.
- Case: check that it accepts ATX boards.
- Power supply: confirm it has the 8+8 pin CPU connectors.
- Drives: consider how many PCIe 5.0 and 4.0 drives you'll use.
- Network: a Wi-Fi 7 router is needed for those speeds.
The short version
- An ATX AM5 board for Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 processors.
- DDR5 with AEMP, a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot and four M.2 slots.
- 16+2+1 80A power stages and an 8-layer PCB.
- Wi-Fi 7, 2.5Gb Ethernet and two rear USB4 ports.
- Q-Release Slim, M.2 Q-Latch and BIOS FlashBack for easier building.
