The ASUS TUF Gaming X870-PLUS WiFi is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 socket. It pairs the X870 chipset with DDR5 memory, four M.2 storage slots, WiFi 7 and USB4. It is the part of a PC that every other component connects to, so it sets the limits of what a build can do.
Socket and chipset
The board takes AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series desktop processors through the AM5 socket, according to ASUS. X870 is a higher tier of AMD's AM5 chipsets and typically brings newer connectivity as standard, such as USB4 and PCIe 5.0 storage. Confirm your processor is on the board's support list, and whether a BIOS update is needed.
Power delivery in plain terms
ASUS lists a 16+2+1 design with 80 A smart power stages (SPS), an 8-layer PCB, ProCool connectors, alloy chokes and durable capacitors. The power stages convert the supply's voltage to what the processor needs. More stages generally share the load and run cooler, which matters for stable operation with multi-core chips under long, heavy use. The 8-layer circuit board gives more room for signal and power routing.
Memory and expansion
The board uses DDR5 memory, which is incompatible with DDR4. The main graphics slot is a PCIe x16 with Q-Release and supports PCIe 5.0. PCIe 5.0 doubles the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 per lane, though a graphics card or drive only benefits if it supports the newer standard.
Four M.2 slots
There are four M.2 slots, two of which support PCIe 5.0. That allows several fast solid-state drives in one machine, and the board also provides SATA 6 Gbps ports for older drives. Fast drives can run hot, so check the manual for heatsink coverage and for any lane sharing, where using one slot may limit another port.
USB4, HDMI and networking
ASUS lists dual USB4 ports at 40Gbps, a USB 20Gbps Type-C port and HDMI output. USB4 is useful for fast external drives, docks and displays. HDMI works with processors that have integrated graphics. Networking is Wi-Fi 7 with a Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet port. Wi-Fi 7 needs a recent operating system and compatible router to work at full capability.
ASUS tuning tools
The listing names AI Overclocking, AI Cooling II and AEMP, which are meant to simplify performance tuning, fan behaviour and memory profile settings. It also lists Dynamic OC Switcher, Core Flex and PBO Enhancement for overclocking. These are optional; most builders can run the board at its default settings.
Who it suits
It suits builders putting together a gaming or general-purpose desktop around a recent Ryzen processor who want plenty of storage, fast ports and a standard ATX size with room for expansion cards. Those building a small-form-factor PC will need a smaller board.
What to check before you buy
- Processor: confirm it is an AM5 chip and check BIOS requirements.
- Case: ATX boards need a case that supports the size (the listing gives about 13.9 x 10.8 inches).
- Memory: DDR5 only.
- Storage: note which M.2 slots are PCIe 5.0 and any lane sharing.
- Cooler: check AM5 mounting compatibility.
- Power supply: make sure it provides the connectors the board needs.
The short version
- An ATX AM5 motherboard with the X870 chipset for Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series processors.
- 16+2+1 power stages rated at 80 A each, on an 8-layer PCB.
- DDR5 memory, a PCIe 5.0-capable graphics slot and four M.2 slots (two PCIe 5.0).
- Dual USB4 (40Gbps), USB 20Gbps Type-C, Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5Gb Ethernet.
