The ASUS TUF Gaming X670E-PLUS WiFi is an ATX motherboard for AMD Ryzen 7000 series desktop processors. It uses the AM5 socket, supports DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0, and adds WiFi 6E and 2.5 Gb Ethernet. It is the foundation of a current-generation gaming or general-purpose desktop. Here is what the main specs mean.

AM5 socket and Ryzen 7000

AM5 (LGA 1718) is the socket AMD introduced with the Ryzen 7000 series. It is a different socket from earlier AM4 boards, so AM4 processors will not fit, and the board is designed for Ryzen 7000 chips. The X670E chipset sits at the upper end of AMD's lineup for that platform, and the "E" signals extra PCIe 5.0 support.

Power delivery

ASUS lists 14+2 teamed power stages on an eight-layer PCB, with 8+8 ProCool power connectors, alloy chokes and durable capacitors. The power stages convert the supply into the steady voltage that the processor needs. More stages generally spread the load and help keep voltage stable under sustained work such as long gaming sessions or heavy rendering. ASUS says this provides stable power delivery. The listing also refers to 16 power stages in its title, while the feature list describes 14+2, so confirm the figure in the manual.

PCIe 5.0, M.2 and USB

PCIe 5.0 doubles the per-lane bandwidth of PCIe 4.0. It matters most for the newest graphics cards and the fastest NVMe SSDs. The board has four M.2 slots for SSDs, so you can install several drives without add-in cards.

For USB, ASUS lists USB 3.2 Gen2x2 Type-C on the rear, a front-panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C header, and USB4 support. Whether you get USB4 speeds depends on the specific port configuration, so check the specifications.

Networking and audio

The board has Realtek 2.5 Gb Ethernet with TUF LANGuard, ASUS's protective hardware for the network port, and WiFi 6E, which adds the 6GHz band if your router supports it. Two-way AI Noise Cancelation is ASUS's feature for reducing background noise on both microphone and audio output.

Memory and design

The board uses DDR5 memory, which is not compatible with DDR4 modules. The TUF Gaming design uses simple geometric styling. Aura RGB lighting is supported for builders who want to coordinate colours.

What to check before you buy

  • Processor: confirm that your CPU is an AM5 Ryzen 7000 series. Check the manufacturer's CPU support list for BIOS requirements.
  • Memory: you need DDR5 modules. Check the memory support list for compatible kits and speeds.
  • Case size: it is a full ATX board, about 10.8 x 13.3 inches in the listing's dimensions.
  • Storage: count the M.2 drives you plan to use and check which slots share bandwidth.
  • Cooler fit: make sure your CPU cooler supports the AM5 mounting.
  • I/O needs: check the rear panel and header list against your devices.
  • Power supply: check you have the required CPU power connectors.
