The ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VQM is a 27-inch curved gaming monitor with a Full HD (1920x1080) panel and a 240Hz refresh rate. It is designed for fast-paced games, where smooth motion and low blur matter more than a very high resolution.
What 240Hz means
Refresh rate is how many times per second the screen redraws the image. A 240Hz panel refreshes 240 times a second, against 60 times on a typical office monitor. To benefit, the computer has to produce frames that quickly, so the graphics card and the game settings matter as much as the display. In fast shooters and racing games, a higher refresh rate typically makes motion look smoother and responses feel more immediate.
Response time and motion blur
ASUS rates the monitor at 1ms (MPRT). MPRT stands for moving picture response time, a measure of how long moving objects stay blurred on screen. It is not the same as the grey-to-grey figure some makers quote, so the two numbers should not be compared directly. ASUS also includes Extreme Low Motion Blur (ELMB) technology, which it says further reduces ghosting and motion blur.
Adaptive sync and FreeSync Premium
When a game's frame rate does not match the screen's refresh rate, the picture can tear or stutter. Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets the monitor follow the graphics card's output instead. ASUS says FreeSync Premium enables VRR by default. It works with AMD graphics cards through FreeSync Premium and with NVIDIA cards through Adaptive-Sync. ASUS lists compatibility with GeForce GTX 10 series, GTX 16 series, RTX 20 series and newer cards.
The 1500R curve
"1500R" means the curve matches a circle with a 1500mm radius. It is a fairly pronounced curve, intended to wrap the picture around your field of view for a more immersive feel. A curve can also make a 27-inch screen feel more natural when you sit close.
Picture quality and HDR
ASUS says the monitor supports HDR10 and covers 105% of the sRGB colour gamut. HDR10 is a format for high dynamic range content. On monitors in this class, HDR is typically more modest than on displays built specifically for HDR, so treat it as a supported format rather than a guarantee of dramatic results. Full HD at 27 inches also means a lower pixel density than higher-resolution panels, which some people notice in text sharpness.
Stand and ergonomics
ASUS describes an ergonomically designed stand with extensive swivel, tilt and height adjustments. Setting the screen so the top edge is roughly at eye level usually reduces neck strain over long sessions. The listing gives the monitor's size as about 3.9 x 18.9 x 19.7 inches (with stand) and a weight of 13.2 lb.
Who it suits
It suits players of competitive games who have a graphics card capable of high frame rates and want a smooth, large screen at 1080p. It is a less natural fit for people who mainly want sharp text or colour-critical creative work.
What to check before you buy
- Graphics card: confirm your card can drive the frame rates you want, and check its video outputs against the monitor's inputs.
- Cables: check that the right cable is included or on hand for 240Hz.
- Desk space: a 27-inch curved screen with its stand needs depth.
- Resolution: decide whether Full HD suits your viewing distance.
- Mounting: check the manual for wall or arm mounting options.
- Settings: the refresh rate may need to be set manually in your system.
