The ASUS TUF Gaming VG27VQM is a 27-inch curved gaming monitor with a Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate. It is aimed at fast-paced games where smooth motion matters more than a very high pixel count. Here is what its main specifications mean and who they suit.

Full HD, 27 inches and a 1500R curve

Full HD on a 27-inch screen is a lower pixel density than 1440p or 4K, so fine detail is slightly softer. The benefit is that a graphics card finds it much easier to reach very high frame rates, which is how a 240Hz screen is best used. The 1500R curve means the screen follows a circle with a 1,500mm radius. In general, the curve places the edges at a more even distance from your eyes, which many people find more immersive, especially when sitting fairly close.

Refresh rate and response time

At 240Hz, the screen updates 240 times a second, compared with the common 60Hz. To get the benefit, your computer must produce frames that fast, so it suits competitive and esports-style titles. The listed response time is 1ms (MPRT), which measures motion blur persistence rather than grey-to-grey pixel changes; MPRT figures are generally achieved with blur-reduction modes enabled, so they are not directly comparable with GTG numbers.

ASUS Extreme Low Motion Blur (ELMB) is a backlight strobing technology that aims to further reduce ghosting and motion blur. It can reduce screen brightness, and ASUS notes it is designed to work with variable refresh rate settings in the monitor's menu; check the manual for which combinations are available.

Variable refresh rate

FreeSync Premium enables variable refresh rate (VRR) by default, helping remove tearing. The monitor also supports Adaptive-Sync with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 series, GTX 16 series, RTX 20 series and newer graphics cards, and FreeSync Premium with AMD graphics cards.

Stand and set-up

The ergonomic stand offers swivel, tilt and height adjustment, so you can set the screen at eye level. In the box are the power cord and adapter, a DisplayPort cable, an HDMI cable, a USB A to B cable, a quick start guide and a warranty card. The monitor is listed as HDR-capable, but check the specification to see what level of HDR it supports.

Size and weight: about 23.9 x 8.3 x 15.2 inches (61 x 21 x 39 cm) with the stand, and 12.4 lb (5.6 kg).

Who it suits

It suits competitive players with a graphics card that can push high frame rates at 1080p, and anyone who prefers a smooth screen over a very high resolution. People who mainly watch films, edit photos or want sharp text may prefer a higher-resolution panel.

What to check before you buy

  • Graphics card: check it can run your games at or near 240fps at 1080p.
  • Connection: use the included DisplayPort cable (or HDMI) and confirm which input supports 240Hz in the manual.
  • Curve: if you prefer a flat screen for design work, remember this one is curved.
  • Desk space: check width and stand depth.
  • Warranty and HDR: look at the warranty terms and the HDR specification.
