The ASUS TUF Gaming B860M-PLUS WiFi is a micro-ATX motherboard built around Intel's LGA 1851 socket and the B860 chipset. It is the board that every other part of a desktop PC plugs into, and this one is aimed at builders putting together a compact gaming or general-purpose machine around an Intel Core Ultra (Series 2) processor.

What the socket and chipset decide

The LGA 1851 socket fits Intel Core Ultra Series 2 desktop processors, according to ASUS. The socket is physical, so a processor from an older Intel generation will not fit. The B860 chipset sits in the middle of Intel's range: it supplies the connections for storage, USB and networking, but typically leaves out some of the overclocking features found on higher-end chipsets. Check the processor's own specification for what it supports before pairing the two.

Power delivery and cooling

ASUS lists 12+1+2+1 stages rated at 80A, fed through 8+8 pin power connectors, with alloy chokes and durable capacitors. In general, more and stronger power stages help a board deliver steady voltage to the processor under sustained load, which matters most with higher-wattage chips.

For heat, the board carries large heatsinks over the voltage regulators, plus heatsinks on the M.2 slots and the chipset. Hybrid fan headers can run either a three-pin or four-pin fan, and the Fan Xpert 4 software is used to set fan curves.

Memory, graphics and storage

The board uses DDR5 memory. DDR5 modules are not interchangeable with DDR4, so existing memory from an older PC will not carry over.

The main graphics slot is a PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlot with Q-Release. PCIe 5.0 doubles the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0, though a current graphics card may not use all of it. The SafeSlot name refers to a reinforced slot, and Q-Release is ASUS's release latch that makes removing a long graphics card easier.

For storage there are three M.2 slots: one supports PCIe 5.0 and two support PCIe 4.0, all with heatsinks. M.2 SSDs are small drives that plug straight into the board, with no cables, and the M.2 Q-Latch lets you secure them without a tiny screw.

Networking and connections

ASUS lists Wi-Fi 7, Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet, and a Q-Antenna design for attaching the antenna. Wi-Fi 7 needs a compatible router to run at its full speed, while the 2.5Gb port helps if your home network and switch support that rate.

On the video side there are HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, which work with the processor's integrated graphics when a separate card is not installed. USB options include a 20Gbps Type-C and a 10Gbps Type-C port. For lighting, there are addressable RGB headers and Aura Sync support.

Who it suits

It suits people building a compact Intel desktop who want DDR5, current storage options and modern wireless built in. The micro-ATX format, roughly 9.6 by 9.6 inches (about 24 by 24 cm), fits a wide range of cases, from small towers to larger ones.

What to check before you buy

  • Processor: confirm your chip is an LGA 1851 model and that the BIOS version on the board supports it.
  • Memory: you need DDR5 modules, and the manual lists the speeds and capacities supported.
  • Case: check the case accepts micro-ATX boards.
  • Power supply: the 8+8 pin connectors need a supply that provides two of them.
  • Storage and cards: count the drives and expansion cards you plan to use against the slots available.
  • Operating system: you need to buy or already own a licence, as the board does not include one.

The short version

  • A micro-ATX LGA 1851 board for Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processors.
  • 12+1+2+1 power stages rated at 80A, with large VRM heatsinks.
  • DDR5 memory and a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot.
  • Three M.2 slots (one PCIe 5.0, two PCIe 4.0), all with heatsinks.
  • Wi-Fi 7, 2.5Gb Ethernet, HDMI, DisplayPort and 20Gbps USB Type-C.
