The ASUS TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 platform, using the B850 chipset. It pairs DDR5 memory support with WiFi 7, three M.2 slots and a range of features meant to make building easier. It is aimed at people assembling a current-generation Ryzen desktop.

AM5 socket and processor support

AM5 is the socket for AMD's newer desktop processors. ASUS lists this board as ready for Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series CPUs. As with any platform, an older board revision can need a BIOS update for the newest chips. The BIOS FlashBack button on this board is designed for that: it typically lets you update firmware from a USB drive without a processor installed.

Power design

ASUS rates the power solution as 14+2+2 for 80A, fed by an 8+8 pin ProCool power connection, with alloy coils and durable capacitors. (The product title gives a slightly different stage count, so check the specification sheet for the final figure.) In general, a stronger power design helps keep voltage steady on processors with many cores under sustained load. The 8+8 pin connection means your power supply needs two 8-pin CPU power cables.

Memory, storage and expansion

The listing title names DDR5 memory up to 8000 and three M.2 slots, including one PCIe Gen5 M.2 slot. PCIe 5.0 doubles the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0, which suits the newest NVMe SSDs. It also has USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, a standard rated at up to 20Gbps, plus DisplayPort and HDMI outputs for processors with integrated graphics.

Networking

The board includes WiFi 7 and Bluetooth, and a 2.5Gbit wired LAN port. WiFi 7 only delivers its full benefit with a WiFi 7 router. The 2.5Gbit port likewise needs matching network equipment to reach its top speed.

Setup-friendly details

ASUS lists several features aimed at easier assembly: PCIe Slot Q-Release Slim, M.2 Q-Latch, M.2 Q-Release and M.2 Q-Slide for fitting drives and cards, Q-Antenna for the wireless aerial, and Q-Dashboard and Q-LED for troubleshooting. A Clear CMOS button and a pre-assembled I/O shield are also listed. The software list includes ASUS DriverHub, TurboV Core, ASUS GlideX and HWiNFO, plus 60-day trials of Norton 360 and AIDA64 Extreme.

Who it suits

It suits a builder starting a new AM5 system who wants DDR5, current wireless and a Gen5 storage slot in a standard ATX layout. Since AM5 takes DDR5 only, it is not a drop-in upgrade for a system with DDR4 memory.

What to check before you buy

  • Processor: confirm your exact CPU is supported and whether it needs a BIOS update first.
  • Memory: AM5 needs DDR5 modules; check the supported speeds in the manual.
  • Case and power supply: it measures about 12.0 x 9.6 inches (ATX) and needs two 8-pin CPU power cables.
  • M.2 drives: check which slots share bandwidth with other ports and which supports Gen5.
  • Network: WiFi 7 and 2.5Gbit speeds depend on your router and switch.
  • Cooler: the board does not include a CPU cooler, and Ryzen 9000 coolers must fit the AM5 mounting.

The short version

  • An ATX motherboard for AMD AM5 with the B850 chipset, listed for Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000.
  • DDR5 support, three M.2 slots (one Gen5) and USB 3.2 Gen 2x2.
  • WiFi 7, Bluetooth and 2.5Gbit LAN.
  • Rated 14+2+2 power solution with 8+8 pin connection.
  • BIOS FlashBack, Clear CMOS button and tool-free Q-design features.
