The ASUS TUF Gaming B850-E WiFi is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 socket, built on the B850 chipset. It supports DDR5 memory, PCIe 5.0 and fast wired and wireless networking, and it is meant for builders putting together a current gaming or general-purpose desktop.

Socket and processor support

The AM5 socket supports AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series desktop processors, according to ASUS. It is worth confirming the exact processor you plan to use against ASUS's compatibility list, since some CPUs need a BIOS update first. The board has a BIOS FlashBack feature, which lets you update the firmware from a USB drive without a processor installed.

Memory, storage and expansion

The board uses DDR5 memory. It has three M.2 slots: one PCIe 5.0 slot and two PCIe 4.0 slots. PCIe 5.0 doubles the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 per lane, which matters for the newest SSDs, though most everyday tasks don't saturate even PCIe 4.0 drives. The graphics card slot is PCIe 5.0 x16, a SafeSlot with Q-Release, a button that makes removing a long card easier.

Power delivery and cooling

ASUS lists 8+2+1 80A DrMOS power stages, an 8-layer PCB, 8+4 pin ProCool power connectors, alloy chokes and durable capacitors. In general, stronger power delivery helps a processor hold its boost clocks steadily under load. Cooling includes an enlarged VRM heatsink, a flexible M.2 heatsink, a chipset heatsink, hybrid fan headers and the Fan Xpert 4 fan-control software.

Connectivity

Networking includes Wi-Fi 6E and Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet. Video outputs are DisplayPort and HDMI, which work with the graphics built into some Ryzen processors. USB options include a front-panel connector for USB 20Gbps Type-C and a rear USB 10Gbps Type-C port.

Builder-friendly details

ASUS highlights several features for easier assembly: PCIe Slot Q-Release, M.2 Q-Latch for tool-free drive installation, Q-Antenna, Q-Dashboard, Q-LED diagnostic lights and a pre-mounted I/O shield. For lighting, three Addressable RGB Gen 2 headers work with Aura Sync. Software includes ASUS AI Advisor, TurboV Core, DriverHub and GlideX.

Size and who it suits

The board measures roughly 14.0 x 10.7 inches (about 36 x 27 cm) in the listing and weighs 2.7 lb. It is a standard ATX board, so it needs an ATX-compatible case. It suits people building a new AM5 desktop who want PCIe 5.0 support, three M.2 slots and onboard Wi-Fi.

What to check before you buy

  • Processor support: confirm your CPU against the compatibility list and any needed BIOS version.
  • Memory: check the supported DDR5 speeds and module types in the manual.
  • Case size: the board is ATX; make sure the case supports it.
  • Storage plans: the PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot is only one of three, so plan which drive goes where.
  • Cooler fit: check the AM5 mounting on your CPU cooler.
  • Power connectors: your power supply needs the 8+4 pin CPU connectors.

The short version

  • ATX motherboard for AMD AM5 with the B850 chipset and DDR5.
  • PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, one PCIe 5.0 M.2 and two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots.
  • Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5Gb Ethernet, USB 20Gbps and 10Gbps Type-C.
  • 8+2+1 80A DrMOS power stages and several heatsinks.
