The ASUS TUF Gaming B650EM-E WiFi is a Micro-ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 platform. It connects the processor, DDR5 memory, storage and add-in cards in a smaller board than a full ATX one, so it suits compact and mid-size cases.

Socket and processors

ASUS lists support for AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series desktop processors through the AM5 socket. Some chips on some boards need a BIOS update before they will start. The listing mentions BIOS FlashBack, which lets you update the firmware from a USB drive without a CPU installed.

Memory and storage

The board uses DDR5 memory. It has three M.2 slots: one PCIe 5.0 and two PCIe 4.0. PCIe 5.0 doubles the bandwidth of 4.0 for the newest NVMe drives. Many everyday uses won't saturate either, so the extra slots matter mainly for capacity and expansion. The M.2 heatsink helps with the heat that fast drives produce.

Power delivery and cooling

ASUS describes 8+2+1 80A DrMOS power stages, an 8-layer PCB, 8+4 pin ProCool power connectors, alloy chokes and durable capacitors. These parts feed the CPU, and stronger power delivery matters most with higher-core-count chips. Enlarged VRM, M.2 and PCH heatsinks, plus hybrid fan headers and the Fan Xpert 2+ utility, handle cooling.

Connectivity

  • Wi-Fi 6 for wireless networking
  • Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet
  • A PCIe 5.0 x16 slot for a graphics card
  • DisplayPort and HDMI video outputs, for processors with integrated graphics
  • A rear USB 10Gbps Type-C port and a front USB 5Gbps Type-C connector (this needs a case with a matching front connector)

Building features

PCIe Slot Q-Release, M.2 Q-Latch, Q-LED and a pre-mounted I/O shield aim to make assembly simpler. Three Addressable RGB Gen 2 headers work with Aura Sync lighting. Software includes ASUS DriverHub, TUF Protection and DTS audio processing, and the board supports 64-bit Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Who it suits

It suits builders putting together a compact AM5 desktop who want PCIe 5.0 storage, DDR5, WiFi 6 and 2.5Gb wired networking on one board.

What to check before you buy

  • Case: the board is Micro-ATX, about 9.6 x 9.6 inches, so confirm your case supports that size.
  • Processor: check your exact Ryzen model against the support list, and any BIOS requirement.
  • Memory: AM5 takes DDR5 only, so older DDR4 modules will not fit.
  • Storage: count your M.2 drives and compare them with the three slots.
  • Power supply: make sure it has the 8+4 pin CPU connectors.
  • Front ports: check your case for a front USB Type-C header if you want to use it.

The short version

  • A Micro-ATX AM5 motherboard for Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series.
  • DDR5 memory, with one PCIe 5.0 and two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots.
  • Wi-Fi 6, 2.5Gb Ethernet, DisplayPort and HDMI.
  • 8+2+1 80A DrMOS power stages with large heatsinks.
  • BIOS FlashBack, Q-Release and Q-Latch for simpler building.
