The ASUS TUF GAMING B650E-E WIFI is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 socket. It combines DDR5 memory support, a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, three M.2 slots, Wi-Fi 6E and a front USB 20Gbps connector. Here is what those specs mean when you plan a build.

Socket and processor support

The board is built on the AMD B650 chipset with an AM5 socket. ASUS lists support for Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series desktop processors. Which BIOS version a given board ships with can affect whether a newer chip starts first time, so check the maker's compatibility list for your processor. BIOS FlashBack, which the board offers, lets you update the BIOS from a USB drive without a processor installed.

Power stages

ASUS describes 8+2+1 power stages rated at 80A each, using DrMOS parts, on an 8-layer PCB. Power comes in through 8+4 pin ProCool connectors, with alloy chokes and durable capacitors. In general, higher-rated stages and a thicker PCB help deliver stable power to the processor under sustained load, and an enlarged VRM heatsink helps keep those parts cooler.

Memory and storage

The board takes DDR5 memory. For storage there are three M.2 slots: one PCIe 5.0 slot and two PCIe 4.0 slots. PCIe 5.0 SSDs offer very high peak speeds, but PCIe 4.0 drives are fast enough for most day-to-day tasks, which makes the two PCIe 4.0 slots useful for extra capacity. The PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlot, with its Q-Release button, is meant for a graphics card; the Q-Release makes removing the card easier when a large cooler blocks access to the latch.

Connectivity

Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6GHz band to the usual two bands, and Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet handles wired connections faster than standard gigabit. On USB, ASUS lists a front USB 20Gbps Type-C connector and a rear USB 10Gbps Type-C port. DisplayPort and HDMI outputs on the rear panel apply to processors with integrated graphics.

Cooling and software

Cooling features include an enlarged VRM heatsink, a flexible M.2 heatsink, a chipset heatsink and hybrid fan headers managed through Fan Xpert 4. The software suite includes Two-Way AI Noise Cancelling, AI Suite 3 and ASUS DriverHub. Three Addressable RGB Gen 2 headers work with Aura Sync lighting.

Build aids

M.2 Q-Latch, PCIe Slot Q-Release, Q-Antenna, Q-LED and a pre-mounted I/O shield are all meant to make assembly simpler. ASUS also says the board is ready for AI PC use.

Who it suits

It suits builders who want an AM5 ATX board with plenty of storage slots, current USB and wireless standards and a stronger power design than basic boards, and who are comfortable assembling a PC themselves.

What to check before you buy

  • Processor: confirm your exact Ryzen model and the BIOS version it needs.
  • Memory: AM5 uses DDR5 only.
  • Case: an ATX board needs a case that supports the size.
  • Storage plan: check how the three M.2 slots share lanes with other ports in the manual.
  • Front panel: the 20Gbps front connector needs a case with a matching Type-C cable.
  • Cooler: check that your cooler supports the AM5 mounting.
  • Graphics outputs: the video ports are only active with a processor that has integrated graphics.

The short version

  • ATX AM5 motherboard on the B650 chipset with DDR5 support.
  • 8+2+1 80A DrMOS power stages, an 8-layer PCB and an enlarged VRM heatsink.
  • One PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots and a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot.
  • Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5Gb Ethernet, front USB 20Gbps and BIOS FlashBack.
