The ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-Plus is a micro-ATX motherboard for AMD Ryzen processors in the AM4 socket. It uses the B550 chipset and is aimed at compact gaming PCs that need PCIe 4.0 storage and graphics. Here is what its specifications mean.
Socket and processor support
The AM4 socket supports 3rd Gen Ryzen processors, and ASUS highlights Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 CPUs as a pairing. The product description refers to a BIOS update with an AMD AGESA update. In general, boards on shelves may carry an older BIOS, so check the CPU support list for your processor and see whether a BIOS update is needed.
AM4 is a mature platform. It uses DDR4 memory, so the board is not compatible with DDR5 modules.
PCIe 4.0 and storage
The board supports PCIe 4.0, which doubles the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0 per lane. It has two M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs, one of them with PCIe 4.0 x4 connectivity, according to ASUS. A PCIe 4.0 SSD needs both a compatible processor and that specific slot to reach its top speed. The other slot may run at a lower speed.
Power design and cooling
ASUS lists 8+2 DrMOS power stages with alloy chokes and durable capacitors, aimed at reliable power for high-core-count AMD CPUs. The VRM and chipset heatsinks are fanless. There are several hybrid fan headers, and fan speeds can be managed through Fan Xpert 4 or the UEFI Q-Fan Control utility.
The TUF line is described by ASUS as using military-grade components. That wording refers to the brand's component standards, not to a formal standard you can look up in the specification.
Networking and ports
The board has 2.5Gb LAN with ASUS LANGuard. This is faster than standard gigabit Ethernet when your router or switch supports it. Video output is through HDMI 2.1 (4K at 60Hz) and DisplayPort 1.2, which works with Ryzen processors that have integrated graphics. USB includes a front-panel USB 3.2 Gen 1 connector plus USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C and Type-A ports.
BIOS FlashBack and RGB
BIOS FlashBack lets you update the BIOS from a USB stick without a processor or memory installed, which helps if an older BIOS won't recognise a new CPU. The listing's notes say to rename the BIOS file with the BIOSRenamer tool first. Check the manual for the exact steps.
An addressable Gen 2 RGB header and Aura Sync let you control compatible lighting.
Who it suits
It suits builders of compact AMD gaming or general-purpose PCs who want PCIe 4.0 and fast networking, and anyone upgrading within the AM4 platform.
What to check before you buy
- Processor: check it is on the supported list, and which BIOS version it needs.
- Memory: DDR4 only.
- Case size: micro-ATX boards fit micro-ATX and larger cases.
- Storage: know which M.2 slot gives PCIe 4.0 speeds.
- Graphics output: integrated video needs a Ryzen processor with graphics.
- What's in the box: check which cables and accessories are included.
