The ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQN is a 27-inch gaming monitor with a QHD (2560 x 1440) Fast IPS panel that supports refresh rates up to 360Hz. ASUS aims it at competitive players of fast shooters, and it includes an NVIDIA G-SYNC processor. It combines a very high refresh rate with a resolution sharper than Full HD.
What 360Hz means in practice
At 360Hz, the screen refreshes 360 times a second, so each frame is on screen for under 3 milliseconds. The benefit is smoother motion and a more current picture, but only when your graphics card and processor can deliver frames at close to that rate. In many games at QHD, that takes a powerful PC and tuned settings. The difference from 144Hz or 240Hz is also more subtle than the jump from 60Hz.
Fast IPS technology
ASUS describes the panel as Fast IPS, which it says is built for quick pixel transitions. IPS panels typically offer wide viewing angles and good colour. ASUS lists 1ms response time, a figure measured under the maker's test conditions.
G-SYNC and the Reflex Latency Analyzer
The monitor has a G-SYNC processor, which is designed to keep the screen in step with the graphics card and avoid tearing. It also includes the NVIDIA Reflex Latency Analyzer. This lets you measure system latency, from mouse click to screen response, with a compatible mouse and graphics card. For competitive players, that is a way to compare settings and see their effect. Check NVIDIA's compatibility list for details.
HDR and colour
The monitor meets DisplayHDR 600 and supports HDR10. DisplayHDR 600 is a mid-level tier that typically offers a noticeably brighter peak than the entry level. ASUS lists coverage of 120 to 125% sRGB and 95% DCI-P3, a wider range of colours than basic sRGB-only screens.
Ergonomics, ports and weight
ASUS describes an ergonomic stand and VESA wall mounting. The listing mentions HDMI, DisplayPort and USB connections. The monitor weighs 18.5 lb, a little heavier than many 27-inch screens, so check desk and arm capacity.
Who it suits
It suits competitive PC gamers with a high-end system who play fast games at high frame rates. It is probably more than casual players need, particularly if their hardware can't reach those frame rates.
What to check before you buy
- Graphics card: G-SYNC and the Reflex Latency Analyzer are NVIDIA features.
- Frame rates: confirm your PC can approach 360 frames a second in the games you play.
- Cable: use the cable and port the manual recommends for the top refresh rate.
- Mount: weight is 18.5 lb, so check any arm's rated capacity.
- Peripherals: the latency analyzer needs a compatible mouse.
