The ASUS ROG Strix Z690-F Gaming WiFi is an ATX motherboard for 12th Generation Intel Core processors. It uses the LGA 1700 socket and supports DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0. The motherboard is the board that connects every other part of a desktop PC, so its socket, memory type and expansion slots decide which components you can fit.

Socket, memory and PCIe 5.0

LGA 1700 is the socket for 12th Gen Intel Core chips, so the processor must match it. The board uses DDR5 memory, which is not interchangeable with DDR4: the modules have a different notch and won't fit. PCIe 5.0 is the newest slot generation listed, and it roughly doubles the data rate of PCIe 4.0 per lane. In practice, many current graphics cards and drives don't use all that bandwidth yet, but it gives room for future parts.

Power delivery

ASUS lists 16+1 power stages, a ProCool II power connector, alloy chokes and durable capacitors. The voltage regulator module, or VRM, feeds the processor, and more stages generally spread the load and handle sustained multi-core work. ASUS says the design is meant to support multi-core processors.

Cooling

A heatsink covers the VRM, and the chipset (PCH) has a fanless heatsink. A double-sided M.2 heatsink helps with fast storage drives, which can run warm. The board has hybrid fan headers, and the Fan Xpert 4 utility lets you set fan behaviour.

Networking, audio and connectors

On-board WiFi 6E adds access to the 6 GHz band where your router supports it. There is also Intel 2.5Gb Ethernet with ASUS LANGuard, and Bluetooth 5.2. The listing mentions Thunderbolt 4, four M.2 slots and a front-panel USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C connector, which needs a case with a matching front port. Audio comes from the ALC4080 codec with a Savitech SV3H712 amplifier.

AI features and lighting

ASUS describes AI Overclocking, AI cooling, AI networking (GameFirst VI) and AI noise cancellation. These are software-assisted tuning features, and results vary with your parts. Styling includes a monochrome finish, an iridescent ROG logo and Aura lighting.

Size

It is a standard ATX board, listed at 13.3 x 10.7 inches. Check that your case supports ATX.

Who it suits

It suits builders putting together a gaming or high-performance PC around a 12th Gen Intel processor who want fast networking and plenty of storage slots. It does not suit people reusing DDR4 memory or planning a different CPU socket.

What to check before you buy

  • Processor: confirm that it is a 12th Gen Intel Core chip with an LGA 1700 socket.
  • Memory: this board takes DDR5 only.
  • Case: needs ATX support and, for the front USB-C feature, a matching front-panel connector.
  • Cooler: confirm your CPU cooler supports LGA 1700 mounting.
  • BIOS: check the manufacturer's support page for any firmware needs with your processor.
  • Wi-Fi 6E: the 6 GHz band needs a compatible router.
