The ASUS ROG Strix Z690-E Gaming WiFi is a full-size ATX motherboard for 12th Generation Intel Core processors. It combines the LGA 1700 socket with DDR5 memory, PCIe 5.0, built-in WiFi 6E and plenty of storage options, making it a foundation for a high-end gaming or content-creation PC. Here is what the main specs mean.
Socket and platform
The board uses Intel's LGA 1700 socket and is listed as ready for 12th Gen Intel Core processors. It supports DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0, and is described as Windows 11 ready out of the box. As always, check the manufacturer's CPU support list, because a processor must match both the socket and the chipset generation, and a BIOS update may be needed for some.
Power and cooling
ASUS lists 18+1 power stages of 90A each, a ProCool II power connector, alloy chokes and durable capacitors. Power stages feed clean, steady power to the processor, and a high count with high current capacity is meant to support multi-core chips under sustained load. Cooling includes a VRM heatsink, a fanless chipset heatsink, a double-sided M.2 heatsink, hybrid fan headers and the Fan Xpert 4 utility for managing fan curves. Hybrid headers accept both three-pin and four-pin fans.
Storage and expansion
The board supports up to five M.2 slots, including one PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, and comes bundled with the ROG Hyper M.2 card, which adds extra M.2 drives through an expansion slot. PCIe 5.0 SSDs can in principle transfer data faster than PCIe 4.0 drives, but the SSD must support it and many everyday tasks won't show the difference. ASUS also lists a PCIe 5.0 Safeslot, a reinforced graphics-card slot meant to resist the stress of heavy cards.
Networking and connectivity
Wireless is 2x2 WiFi 6E, covering the 2.4, 5 and 6GHz bands, with Bluetooth 5.2. WiFi 6E needs a compatible router to use the 6GHz band. Wired networking is Intel 2.5 Gb Ethernet with ASUS LANGuard. Video output goes through HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 (these work when the processor has integrated graphics), and the listing also mentions Thunderbolt 4 and USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C and Type-A, plus a front-panel Type-C connector.
Audio, lighting and the AI features
Audio uses the ALC4080 codec with a Savitech SV3H712 amplifier, DTS Sound Unbound and Sonic Studio III. The "AI" label covers AI Overclocking, AI cooling, AI networking (GameFirst VI) and AI noise cancellation, which are software tools for tuning and communications. Lighting includes an illuminated acrylic display, Aura Sync RGB, RGB headers and Gen 2 addressable headers.
Built for easy assembly
The listing highlights DIY-friendly features such as SafeDIMM, Q-LED status lights, M.2 Q-Latch, a CPU socket lever protector, a pre-mounted I/O shield, BIOS FlashBack, a Clear CMOS button, Q-Code and FlexKey. BIOS FlashBack lets you update the firmware from a USB drive without a processor installed, which can help when a new CPU needs a newer BIOS.
Who it suits
It suits builders who want a full-featured ATX board for a 12th Gen Intel processor, with many drives, fast networking and RGB lighting.
What to check before you buy
- Processor: confirm your Intel CPU is supported and if a BIOS update is needed.
- Memory: this is a DDR5 board, so DDR4 modules will not fit.
- Case: it is a full-size ATX board, so check that your case supports that form factor.
- Power supply: check the connectors the board needs.
- Display outputs: HDMI and DisplayPort need integrated graphics on the processor.
- Cooler: check the LGA 1700 mounting compatibility.
