The ASUS ROG Strix XG32UCG is a 32-inch gaming monitor that can switch between two modes: a sharp 4K picture at up to 160 Hz, or a Full HD picture at up to 320 Hz. It is aimed at people who play detailed games on a big screen but sometimes want the fastest possible refresh rate for competitive titles.

What dual mode does

At 3840 x 2160, the panel shows four times the pixels of Full HD, which means finer detail and sharper text on a 32-inch screen. In FHD mode, the refresh rate rises to 320 Hz. ASUS describes a hotkey called Frame Rate Boost that moves between the two. Hitting 4K at 160 Hz needs a powerful graphics card and the right cable, while the FHD mode is easier to drive. The lower resolution is scaled to fill the screen, so it will look softer than native 4K.

Fast IPS and response time

The panel uses ASUS Fast IPS technology. ASUS rates it at 0.3 ms minimum response time. The description also quotes 1 ms. Response-time figures are measured under particular conditions, so treat them as a guide to the panel's speed. IPS panels generally give wide viewing angles and consistent colour.

Motion clarity

ELMB SYNC, which stands for Extreme Low Motion Blur Sync, lets the monitor's motion-blur reduction work together with variable refresh rate. ASUS says this removes ghosting and tearing. The monitor is also listed as G-SYNC Compatible, meaning it can use variable refresh rate with supported graphics cards.

Colour

The listing gives 95% DCI-P3 coverage, a wide colour gamut used in cinema and HDR content. ASUS adds gray-scale tracking for smoother gradations. The monitor is described as an HDR model, though how convincing HDR looks depends on brightness and local dimming, so check the full specification sheet for those figures.

Connections and software

USB Type-C with DisplayPort Alt mode lets a compatible laptop or device send video over one cable, which keeps the desk tidy. DisplayWidget Center lets you adjust monitor settings with a mouse instead of the on-screen buttons. ROG Gaming A.I features are also listed. There is also a tripod socket, as the listing title states.

What is in the box

A DisplayPort cable, power cord and adapter, ROG pouch, ROG sticker, quick start guide and warranty card. The listing mentions a 3-year warranty. The monitor is about 28.2 inches wide and 22.6 inches high including the stand (roughly 72 x 57 cm) and weighs 21.8 lb (about 9.9 kg).

Who it suits

It suits players with a high-end graphics card who like single-player games in 4K and want a high refresh option for shooters, as well as people who want a large, sharp screen for work.

What to check before you buy

  • Graphics card: confirm it can output 4K at 160 Hz over DisplayPort, and which ports it offers.
  • Desk space: a 32-inch screen is wide, so measure the desk and the viewing distance.
  • USB-C: check that your laptop supports DisplayPort Alt mode.
  • HDR needs: look at the full spec for brightness before relying on HDR.
  • Mounting: check the stand's height and tilt adjustments, or the mount options, against your setup.

The short version

  • 32-inch 4K Fast IPS monitor with a second mode of FHD at 320 Hz.
  • 0.3 ms minimum response time as rated by ASUS, ELMB SYNC and G-SYNC Compatible.
  • 95% DCI-P3 colour gamut, USB-C with DisplayPort Alt mode, DisplayPort cable included.
  • About 21.8 lb with a 3-year warranty listed.
