The ASUS ROG Strix XG258Q is a 24.5-inch gaming monitor built for fast-paced competitive games. It pairs a Full HD (1920 x 1080) panel with a 240Hz refresh rate and a 1ms response time, so motion appears smooth and sharp. It also includes adaptive sync, adjustable ergonomics and Aura RGB lighting.
What 240Hz means
Refresh rate is how many times per second the screen redraws. A typical office monitor runs at 60Hz, so the XG258Q's native 240Hz is four times as many updates. In fast games, that generally means smoother motion and less blur when the view moves quickly. To benefit, your computer needs to produce high frame rates, which depends on the graphics card, the game and the settings. Many people use 240Hz displays for esports titles that run at high frame rates.
Response time and resolution
ASUS lists a 1ms response time, which describes how quickly pixels change colour. Faster changes usually mean less ghosting behind moving objects. The brightness is listed at 400 cd/m², which is enough for a typical bright room.
At 24.5 inches, 1920 x 1080 gives a sharp image. On smaller panels such as this one, Full HD keeps pixel density comfortable, and it's easier for a graphics card to hold a high frame rate than at higher resolutions.
Adaptive sync
The monitor is G-Sync compatible and supports Adaptive Sync. These technologies let the screen's refresh rate follow the frame rate the graphics card is producing, which ASUS says gives a tear-free image. Compatibility depends on the graphics card and the driver, so check the settings of your own system.
Ports and ergonomics
Connections are DisplayPort, HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 1.4. As a general rule, to reach high refresh rates at full resolution you should use the DisplayPort or the HDMI 2.0 input rather than the older HDMI 1.4. The stand offers tilt, swivel, pivot and height adjustment, and the monitor is VESA 100 x 100 mm compatible if you prefer an arm or wall mount.
Eye Care and lighting
ASUS lists Eye Care features: a blue light filter that is TÜV Rhineland certified, and flicker-free backlighting. The Aura RGB lighting has customisable effects, and it can be synchronised with other compatible gear. GameVisual presets can be saved to an AXML file and shared with others who use the same monitor. ASUS also lists a three-year warranty with rapid replacement.
Size and weight
The monitor weighs about 12 lb (5.4 kg) with its stand and measures roughly 19.7 inches wide and 21.9 inches tall (about 50 x 56 cm) as listed.
Who it suits
It is aimed at people who play competitive shooters, racing or other fast games and want a high refresh rate on a compact screen. It also suits desks where a 24-inch size is preferred.
What to check before you buy
- Your graphics card: make sure it can output high frame rates at 1080p, and that it has a DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 output.
- Cables: use the correct cable for the input to get the full refresh rate, and check the settings in your operating system.
- Desk space: check width and height with the stand, or confirm that your VESA mount fits.
- Consoles: check what refresh rates and resolutions your console supports over HDMI.
- Panel preferences: if you want a larger or higher-resolution display, compare size and resolution against what you need.
- Warranty: read the warranty terms for your region.
