The ASUS ROG Strix XG17AHPE is a thin, portable 17.3-inch gaming monitor. It has a Full HD IPS panel running at up to 240Hz, a built-in battery, and USB-C and micro-HDMI inputs, so it can connect to a laptop, console, phone or tablet. It is designed for gaming away from a desk as much as at one.

Panel and refresh rate

The screen is 17.3 inches, 1920 x 1080, and uses an IPS panel. IPS panels are known for wide viewing angles and consistent colour from the side, which helps when a screen is propped at an angle rather than set squarely in front of you. ASUS lists a 3ms (grey-to-grey) response time.

The 240Hz refresh rate means the display can redraw 240 times per second, against 60Hz on a typical screen. In games, that generally means smoother motion. The device you connect must be able to output those frame rates, and many phones, tablets and consoles are limited to lower rates, so the full 240Hz mostly applies to a capable gaming laptop or PC. ASUS also lists Adaptive-Sync, which adjusts the refresh rate to the frame rate to avoid tearing.

Hybrid-signal ports

The monitor has hybrid-signal USB-C and micro-HDMI ports. "Hybrid signal" means the USB-C port can carry both video and power on one cable, if the source device supports video output over USB-C. Micro-HDMI is for devices without that option, such as consoles; this needs a cable with a micro-HDMI end. ASUS names smartphones, laptops, game consoles, cameras and tablets as sources.

Built-in battery

A battery means the monitor can run without being plugged in. ASUS says it gives up to three hours at 240Hz. Real running time generally depends on brightness and refresh rate, and lower settings tend to run longer.

Smart Case

The Smart Case is a folding cover that doubles as a stand. ASUS says it is optimised for scenarios such as console, smartphone and laptop use on the go, and it protects the screen in a bag.

Size and weight

The monitor is about 0.4 inches (around 1 cm) thick and weighs 2.3 lb (about 1 kg), listed at 9.8 x 15.7 inches in the box. That is light enough to carry alongside a laptop. It comes with a three-year warranty, according to ASUS.

Who it suits

It suits people who want a second screen for a laptop on trips, a display for a console away from the TV, or an extra screen for a desk without taking much space.

What to check before you buy

  • Source device: check whether your laptop or phone supports video over USB-C, and whether it can drive 240Hz.
  • Cables: a micro-HDMI cable or a USB-C video cable may be needed, so check what's in the box.
  • Power: the monitor has a battery, but for long sessions you'll want a power source.
  • Console use: check the resolution and refresh rates your console supports.
  • Size: 17.3 inches is a laptop-sized display, so confirm it suits how close you sit.
  • Audio: check what sound output the monitor has, or whether you need headphones.
