The ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 socket, built around the X870E chipset. It is a core component for a high-end desktop: the board that connects the processor, memory, storage, graphics card and networking.

Processor and memory support

The AM5 socket supports AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series desktop processors, according to ASUS. The board uses DDR5 memory and adds AEMP, ASUS's one-click memory profile feature, to simplify running memory at its rated speed. Check ASUS's memory and processor support lists for exact compatible parts and any BIOS version needed for a newer chip.

Power delivery and cooling

A processor's power supply circuit is described by its power stages. ASUS lists an 18+2+2 design, with each stage rated for 110A, plus dual ProCool II power connectors, alloy chokes and durable capacitors. In general, a strong power design helps high-core-count processors hold steady power under heavy load and when overclocked.

For heat, the board has large heatsinks with an integrated I/O cover, high-conductivity thermal pads and an L-shaped heat pipe. All five M.2 slots have cooling.

Storage and expansion

The board has three PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots and two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots. PCIe 5.0 doubles the per-lane bandwidth of PCIe 4.0, and PCIe 5.0 SSDs are typically the fastest consumer drives, although most everyday tasks will not show the full difference. There are also PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlots for the graphics card, reinforced to carry heavy cards.

Connectivity

The listing includes dual USB4 Type-C ports, a front-panel USB 20Gbps Type-C connector, one USB 10Gbps port with Power Delivery 3.0 up to 30W and USB Wattage Watcher, and nine additional USB 10Gbps ports. There is an HDMI port for processors with integrated graphics. Networking is onboard WiFi 7 (802.11be) and Realtek 5Gb Ethernet. WiFi 7 needs a compatible router to use its full capabilities.

Overclocking and tuning

ROG Strix overclocking tools include Dynamic OC Switcher, Core Flex, Asynchronous Clock and PBO Enhancement. ASUS also lists AI Overclocking, AI Cooling II and AI Networking, which automate tuning for users who do not want to adjust settings by hand.

Building features

ASUS describes the board as DIY friendly: PCIe Slot Q-Release Slim, M.2 Q-Latch, M.2 Q-Release, M.2 Q-Slide, Q-Antenna, Q-Dashboard, Q-Code, Q-LED, a start button, BIOS FlashBack and Clear CMOS buttons, and a pre-mounted I/O shield. FlashBack lets you update the BIOS without installing a processor, which helps when pairing the board with a newer chip.

Who it suits

It suits builders putting together a high-end AM5 gaming or content-creation PC who want many fast storage slots and modern connectivity. A simpler build with one drive may not need this many features.

What to check before you buy

  • Case size: it is an ATX board, so check your case supports the form factor.
  • Processor: confirm your Ryzen model is supported and whether a BIOS update is needed.
  • Memory: it needs DDR5 modules, which are not compatible with older DDR4.
  • Cooler fit: check that your cooler supports the AM5 mounting.
  • Power supply: ensure it has the needed CPU power connectors.

The short version

  • AM5 ATX motherboard for Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series processors.
  • 18+2+2 power solution rated at 110A per stage.
  • Three PCIe 5.0 and two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots, plus PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlots.
  • Dual USB4, WiFi 7 and Realtek 5Gb Ethernet.
  • Tool-free and diagnostic features for easier building.
