The ASUS ROG Strix X870-I Gaming WiFi is a Mini-ITX motherboard for AMD's AM5 platform. Mini-ITX is the smallest common desktop board size, so this board suits compact PC builds that still want current features such as DDR5 memory, WiFi 7, USB4 and PCIe 5.0 storage.
What AM5 and X870 mean
AM5 is the processor socket. ASUS says this board is ready for AMD Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 series desktop processors. X870 is the chipset, which determines much of the connectivity available around the processor. Before buying, check ASUS's CPU support list for the BIOS version you need, since some processors may require an update. The board has a BIOS FlashBack button for that purpose, which in general lets you update the BIOS without a processor installed.
Power delivery in a small board
The board uses a 10+2+1 power solution rated for 110A per stage, with ProCool II power connectors, alloy chokes and durable capacitors. Power stages convert the supply voltage to what the processor needs. A stronger design typically helps a multi-core processor stay stable under load, which matters in a small case where space for cooling is limited. ASUS adds heatsinks with an integrated I/O cover, high-conductivity thermal pads and an L-shaped backplate.
Storage: PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 4.0 M.2
There is one PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and one PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot, both with cooling. PCIe 5.0 SSDs offer higher peak transfer speeds than PCIe 4.0 drives, but they also tend to run warmer, which is why the cooling matters. Both slots take M.2 drives, and the M.2 Q-Latch is meant to make fitting tool-free.
Connectivity
- Wireless: WiFi 7 (802.11be) with an Intel 2.5 Gb Ethernet port for wired networks.
- USB: dual USB4 Type-C ports, seven further USB 10Gbps ports and a USB 10Gbps Type-C front-panel connector.
- Video: an HDMI port, useful with processors that include integrated graphics.
- Graphics slot: a PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlot with the Q-Release Slim latch, which is designed to make removing a graphics card easier in a tight case.
Overclocking and software features
ASUS lists AI Overclocking, AI Cooling II, AI Networking and AEMP, a memory profile feature for DDR5. It also describes Dynamic OC Switcher, Core Flex, Asynchronous Clock and PBO Enhancement. These are tuning tools for users who want to adjust performance, and most can be left alone by anyone who prefers default settings. Aura Sync handles lighting.
Built for easy assembly
The "DIY friendly" extras include Q-Antenna, Q-Dashboard, Q-LED, a Clear CMOS button, a pre-mounted I/O shield, and the bundled ROG FPS-II card and ROG Strix Hive II.
Who it suits
It suits builders planning a small-form-factor gaming or workstation PC who want current connectivity. It's less suited to builds needing many expansion slots or memory slots, since Mini-ITX has one PCIe slot and typically two memory slots.
What to check before you buy
- Case compatibility: confirm the case accepts Mini-ITX (about 17 x 17 cm) and has room for your cooler and graphics card.
- Processor support: check the CPU list and BIOS version for your Ryzen model.
- Memory: this is a DDR5 board, so DDR4 won't fit.
- Storage: confirm drive length and heatsink clearance.
- Cooler mounting: check that your AM5 cooler works in a compact layout.
- Power supply connectors: match your supply to the board's requirements in the manual.
The short version
- A Mini-ITX AMD AM5 board with the X870 chipset.
- 10+2+1 power stages rated 110A, with large heatsinks.
- One PCIe 5.0 and one PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot, plus a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot.
- WiFi 7, 2.5 Gb Ethernet and dual USB4 Type-C.
- Tool-free features and BIOS FlashBack for easier building.
