The ASUS ROG Strix X870-A Gaming WiFi is an AM5 motherboard for AMD Ryzen desktop processors. It brings DDR5 memory, PCIe 5.0, Wi-Fi 7 and two Ethernet ports together on a board aimed at enthusiast gaming and high-performance builds.
Socket and platform
AM5 supports AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series desktop processors, according to ASUS. The X870 chipset sits at the higher end of the AM5 range and generally offers more connectivity than lower-tier chipsets. Since the processor you choose may need a certain firmware version, check ASUS's support page before buying a newer or older chip.
Power delivery
ASUS lists a 16+2 power supply stage design. Power stages convert the incoming supply to the voltage the processor needs, and more of them typically spread the load and help keep voltage steady under heavy, sustained work. It is most relevant for high-core-count Ryzen chips and manual overclocking.
Intelligent tuning
The listing describes AI features aimed at simplifying setup: AI ASUS overclocking, AI Cooling II, AI Networking II and AEMP. AEMP is ASUS's memory-profile feature, meant to make it easier to run memory at higher speeds. ASUS also says the board is designed for AI computing with the power and connectivity demanding AI programs may require.
Cooling
The thermal design uses integrated heatsinks with the I/O cover, joined by an L-shaped heat tube and connected to the power stages by high-conductivity thermal pads. The idea is to move heat away from the power components and spread it across a larger metal surface.
Storage and expansion
The board has four M.2 slots and DDR5 memory slots, and supports PCIe 5.0. PCIe 5.0 doubles the per-lane bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 and is mainly relevant to the newest graphics cards and fastest SSDs. Earlier-generation devices still work at their own speeds. ASUS also mentions readiness for next-generation graphics cards.
Networking and USB
Built-in Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) uses the ASUS WiFi Q antenna. There are two wired options: Intel 2.5GB Ethernet and Realtek 5Gb Ethernet. A 5Gb port helps only if the rest of your network, including the router or switch, supports it. USB 20Gbps with PD 3.0 up to 30W is listed, which can deliver charging power to a connected device.
Size and looks
The board is ATX-style at roughly 12.0 x 9.6 inches and 4.0 lb, with Aura Sync lighting control.
Who it suits
It suits builders putting together a new AM5 desktop who want plenty of M.2 storage, the latest wireless standard and two wired network options.
What to check before you buy
- Processor: confirm your Ryzen chip is supported and whether a BIOS update is needed.
- Memory: the board uses DDR5 only; check ASUS's list of supported modules.
- Case: check that it accepts boards of this size.
- Network: a router with Wi-Fi 7 or 5Gb wired is needed to use those speeds.
- Cooler and power supply: check AM5 cooler mounting and your power supply's connectors.
- What's in the box: confirm the antenna and cables that come with it.
