The ASUS ROG Strix X670E-I Gaming WiFi is a mini-ITX motherboard for AMD's AM5 socket. It packs PCIe 5.0, DDR5 memory and fast connectivity into a board only about 17 cm square, which suits small cases. Here is what the main features mean.

Processor support

The AM5 socket is ready for AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series desktop processors. ASUS notes that a BIOS update may be required with Ryzen 9000 and 8000 Series chips, so check that before buying. The board uses dual-channel DDR5 memory, which is not interchangeable with DDR4.

Power delivery and cooling

A 10+2 power stage design with a ProCool II power connector feeds the processor, backed by alloy chokes and durable capacitors. ASUS fits an active VRM heatsink with high-conductivity thermal pads, plus an M.2 Gen 5 and chipset heatsink. "Active" generally means a fan is included, which helps in compact cases with limited airflow, although fans add some noise.

Overclocking tools

ASUS lists Dynamic OC Switcher, Core Flex and PBO Enhancement, along with an EZ mode PBO button. PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) is AMD's feature that lets a supported processor boost higher within the limits of power and cooling. As with all overclocking, results vary between processors.

Small-form-factor design

  • ROG Strix Hive is a bundled module that carries controls and the audio solution, built on a Realtek ALC4050 codec and ESS SABRE 9260Q DAC.
  • ROG FPS-II Card is bundled and mounts ports vertically.
  • Build-friendly details include an M.2 Q-Latch, a pre-mounted I/O shield and a BIOS FlashBack button, which in general lets you update the BIOS without a processor installed.

Storage and expansion

The board offers PCIe 5.0 slots and two M.2 slots, with the M.2 Gen 5 heatsink covering one of them. Two M.2 slots is typical for mini-ITX, so heavy storage users might also need SATA drives or external storage.

Networking and ports

  • Wi-Fi 6E and Intel 2.5 Gb Ethernet with ASUS LANGuard.
  • Two USB4 Type-C ports.
  • HDMI 2.1 output.
  • One RGB header and one addressable Gen 2 header for Aura Sync lighting.

What to check before you buy

  • Confirm your case is mini-ITX compatible, with clearance for the cooler and graphics card.
  • Check your processor is on the supported list and whether a BIOS update is required.
  • Buy DDR5 memory and note the board has limited memory slots.
  • Consider whether the noise of an active VRM fan suits you.
  • Confirm that the ports meet your needs, as mini-ITX boards have fewer than larger ones.

The short version

  • Mini-ITX board for AMD AM5 with DDR5 and PCIe 5.0.
  • 10+2 power stages and an active VRM heatsink.
  • Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5 Gb Ethernet, two USB4 Type-C ports and HDMI 2.1.
  • Two M.2 slots and ROG Strix Hive for audio and controls.
  • Suits compact AMD builds.
