The ASUS ROG Strix X570-E Gaming WiFi II is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM4 socket. It is the foundation of a desktop PC: the board the processor, memory, storage and graphics card all plug into. This one is aimed at gaming builds that want PCIe 4.0, fast networking and plenty of cooling around the chipset and storage.
Which processors it supports
The AM4 socket is what decides which CPUs fit. ASUS lists support for AMD Ryzen 5000, 5000 G-Series, 4000 G-Series, 3000, 3000 G-Series, 2000 and 2000 G-Series desktop processors. "G-Series" parts include integrated graphics, which matters if you want to use the board's HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 video outputs without a separate graphics card.
Motherboards of this generation sometimes need a firmware (BIOS) update before they recognise the newest processors they support. It is worth checking the support page for the exact CPU you plan to use.
What 12+4 power stages mean
Power stages sit between the power supply and the processor, converting the incoming 12V into the lower voltage the CPU needs. The board has 12 stages for the CPU cores and 4 for other CPU functions, and ASUS pairs them with alloy chokes, durable capacitors and a ProCool II power connector. In general, more stages share the electrical load, which tends to help with heat and stability when a multi-core processor is working hard.
Cooling for the chipset, power and storage
ASUS describes a layered cooling design:
- A passive chipset heatsink, so there is no small chipset fan to wear out or add noise.
- A VRM heatsink with an 8 mm heatpipe to carry heat away from the power stages.
- Heatsinks on both on-board M.2 slots.
- A water pump header for custom liquid-cooling loops.
Fast PCIe 4.0 SSDs can run hot under sustained transfers, so M.2 heatsinks are a practical feature rather than decoration.
Storage and PCIe 4.0
PCIe 4.0 doubles the per-lane bandwidth of PCIe 3.0. It matters most for compatible NVMe SSDs and graphics cards, though some PCIe 4.0 features depend on the processor you pair with the board. The board supports up to two M.2 drives, as well as USB 3.2 Gen 2 and AMD StoreMI, a tool that can combine a fast drive with a larger, slower one into a single volume.
Networking and connectivity
The board carries a 2.5 Gbps LAN port and an Intel Gigabit Ethernet port, with ASUS LANGuard protection. For wireless, it has WiFi 6E (802.11ax) with MU-MIMO and Bluetooth 5.2. Gateway teaming through GameFirst V is meant to combine connections. The 2.5 Gbps port only runs at that speed if your router or switch supports it too.
Ports include USB 3.2 Type-A, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C connector and a front-panel USB 3.2 Type-C header. The board measures 12.0 x 9.6 inches (about 30 x 24 cm) and weighs 1.3 lb (about 0.6 kg). Aura Sync RGB lighting is supported for those who want it.
Who it suits
It fits people building or upgrading an AM4 desktop who want fast storage options, strong power delivery and built-in wireless. It is less relevant if you are building on a newer socket, since AM4 boards only take AM4 processors.
What to check before you buy
- CPU compatibility: confirm your processor is on the supported list and whether it needs a BIOS update.
- Case size: this is a full ATX board, so check that your case supports ATX.
- Memory: check the memory type and speeds the board supports in the manual.
- Network speed: to use the 2.5 Gbps port, you need a matching router or switch.
- Graphics output: the video ports only work with processors that have integrated graphics.
- What's in the box: check the cables, antenna and brackets supplied, and keep the manual for the install steps.
The short version
- An ATX motherboard for AMD AM4 processors, from Ryzen 2000 to 5000 series.
- 12+4 power stages, passive chipset heatsink, VRM heatsink and dual M.2 heatsinks.
- PCIe 4.0, two M.2 slots, USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C and a front-panel Type-C header.
- 2.5 Gbps LAN, Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.
- Aura Sync RGB support and a water pump header.
