The ASUS ROG Strix B850-G Gaming WiFi is a compact micro-ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 socket. It has a white circuit board, DDR5 memory support, WiFi 7 and a generous set of storage and USB options. It is meant for people building a smaller gaming PC around a recent Ryzen processor.

Socket and processor support

The board uses the AMD AM5 socket and, according to ASUS, supports Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series desktop processors. The B850 chipset sits in AMD's mainstream tier: it typically offers the modern interfaces most builders need, with fewer extras than the top-tier chipsets. Check that your processor is listed for this board, and whether a BIOS update is needed for it. The board includes a BIOS FlashBack button, which lets you update the firmware from a USB stick without installing a processor first.

Power delivery: 14+2+1 explained

ASUS lists a 14+2+1 power solution with 80 A per stage, fed by an 8+8-pin ProCool power connector, with alloy chokes and durable capacitors. The first number is the stages that feed the processor cores, the second feeds the integrated graphics and system agent, and the last handles other circuitry. In general, more and stronger stages help keep voltage steady under heavy multi-core loads. Heatsinks linked to the VRMs by thermal pads, plus an integrated I/O cover, carry heat away.

Storage: four M.2 slots

There is one PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots under a large heatsink, plus a fourth PCIe 4.0 slot on the underside of the board. PCIe 5.0 drives are the fastest consumer SSDs and typically run warm, so heatsink coverage matters. Tool-free parts such as M.2 Q-Latch and M.2 Q-Release are meant to make fitting drives easier. Check the manual for lane sharing between slots and SATA ports.

Connectivity

Wireless is WiFi 7 (802.11be) with a 2.5Gb Intel Ethernet port. ASUS notes that full WiFi 7 features need Windows 11 version 24H2 or later; earlier Windows 11 versions support WiFi 6E, and Windows 10 supports WiFi 6.

For USB, the board lists a USB 20Gbps Type-C port, a USB 10Gbps Type-C port, six 5Gbps USB-A ports and a front-panel USB 10Gbps Type-C connector. Video outputs include HDMI and DisplayPort, which are used with processors that have integrated graphics. The main graphics slot is a PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlot.

Building aids and lighting

ASUS lists PCIe Slot Q-Release, Q-Antenna, Q-Dashboard, Q-LED, a Clear CMOS button and a pre-mounted I/O shield, all aimed at making assembly and troubleshooting simpler. Aura Sync RGB lighting includes three addressable Gen 2 headers. Audio uses a Realtek ALC1220P codec with a Savitech amplifier and Dolby Atmos support. Software tools include ASUS DriverHub, AI Advisor and AEMP, which applies a memory profile.

Who it suits

It suits builders who want a small-to-mid-sized case, a recent AMD processor, fast storage and modern wireless without moving to a full ATX board. A micro-ATX board has fewer expansion slots, so it is less suited to builds with many add-in cards.

What to check before you buy

  • Case size: confirm your case takes micro-ATX (about 9.6 x 9.6 inches).
  • Processor: make sure it is an AM5 chip and check BIOS compatibility.
  • Memory: DDR5 only; older DDR4 memory will not fit.
  • Cooler: check AM5 mounting support for your cooler.
  • Storage: read the manual on which M.2 slots share bandwidth.
  • Operating system: WiFi 7 needs a recent Windows 11 version.

The short version

  • A micro-ATX AM5 motherboard for Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series processors.
  • 14+2+1 power stages at 80 A each, with large VRM heatsinks.
  • Four M.2 slots, one at PCIe 5.0, and a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot.
  • WiFi 7, 2.5Gb Ethernet and USB 20Gbps Type-C.
  • Tool-free build features and a BIOS FlashBack button.
