The ASUS ROG Strix B850-E Gaming WiFi is an ATX motherboard for AMD's AM5 platform. It sits on the B850 chipset and is aimed at builders who want modern connectivity, plenty of fast storage and strong power delivery for a Ryzen 9000, 8000 or 7000 series processor.

Socket and processor support

The AM5 socket supports Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series desktop processors, according to ASUS. As with any new board and CPU pairing, confirm the exact processor on ASUS's support list, and check whether a BIOS update is needed before first boot.

Power delivery

The board uses a 16+2+2 power solution rated for up to 90A per stage, with dual ProCool power connectors, alloy chokes and durable capacitors. Power stages condition the supply for the processor. More stages with higher current limits typically give more headroom for high-core-count CPUs under sustained load.

Overclocking and tuning features

ASUS lists Dynamic OC Switcher, Core Flex and PBO Enhancement under its ROG Strix overclocking technologies. Dynamic OC Switcher is described as moving between settings depending on load. ASUS also lists AI Advisor, AI Networking II and AEMP (a memory profile feature that helps set up DDR5 memory) to simplify configuration. Memory is DDR5 only, so older DDR4 modules will not fit.

Storage and expansion

Five M.2 slots and PCIe 5.0 x16 SafeSlots give plenty of room for fast SSDs and a graphics card. PCIe 5.0 doubles the per-lane bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 on paper, which mainly benefits the newest SSDs and graphics cards. SafeSlots are reinforced slots, which ASUS says help hold heavier graphics cards. The exact lane layout varies by board, so use the manual to see which slots share bandwidth.

Networking and ports

The board has WiFi 7 with a Q-Antenna, 5G LAN, USB4 and a USB 20Gbps Type-C port with PD 3.0 charging. WiFi 7 needs a compatible router to show its benefit. 5G (5 Gigabit) Ethernet is faster than the common 2.5G type but only helps with matching network equipment. USB4 supports fast external drives and docks. Aura Sync controls RGB lighting.

Size

The listing gives its dimensions as 12.0 x 9.6 x 3.1 inches, which are those of an ATX board with its package, so you need a case that fits ATX.

Who it suits

It suits enthusiast builders and creators who want a high-feature AM5 board with abundant storage and the latest wireless and wired networking. Simpler builds may not use half of it.

What to check before you buy

  • CPU support: confirm your processor and any BIOS update needs.
  • Memory: DDR5 only; check the supported speeds.
  • Case and cooling: ATX case, and cooler clearance around the socket.
  • Power supply: it needs the CPU power connectors the board uses.
  • Storage plans: read the manual for how the five M.2 slots share lanes.
  • Network gear: WiFi 7 and 5G LAN benefit from matching equipment.
  • Installation: follow the manual and anti-static advice.
